Economies are chaotic. There's no way around it, it's just the nature of the beast. James Gleick really understands this stuff, in one of his books he goes into how markets are quite similar to other chaotic systems (like weather).

So yes, boom, bust, boom, it is the only option.

Simple solutions are the best

Dear Ms. Gillard,

Please find below our suggestion for fixing Australia's economy.

Instead of giving billions of dollars to banks that will squander the money on lavish parties and unearned bonuses, use the following plan..

You can call it the Patriotic Retirement Plan:

There are about 10 million people over 50 in the work force.

Pay them $1 million each severance for early retirement with the following stipulations:

1) They MUST retire.
Ten million job openings - unemployment fixed

2) They MUST buy a new Australian car.
Ten million cars ordered - Car Industry fixed

3) They MUST either buy a house or pay off their mortgage -
Housing Crisis fixed

4) They MUST send their kids to school/college/university -
Crime rate fixed

5) They MUST buy $100 WORTH of alcohol/tobacco a week .....

and there's your money back in duty/tax etc

6) Instead of stuffing around with the carbon emissions trading scheme that makes us pay for the major polluters, tell the greedy bastards to reduce their pollution emissions by 75% within 5 years or we shut them down.

It can't get any easier than that!

P.S. If more money is needed, have all members of parliament pay back their falsely claimed expenses and second home allowances

If you think this would work, please forward to everyone you know. If not, please disregard.

Grumpies of the World Unite.

Also .

Let's put the pensioners in jail and the criminals in a nursing home.

This way the pensioners would have access to showers, hobbies and walks. They'd receive unlimited free prescriptions, dental and medical treatment, wheel chairs etc and they'd receive money instead of paying it out.
They would have constant video monitoring, so they could be helped instantly, if they fell, or needed assistance. Bedding would be washed twice a week, and all clothing would be ironed and returned to them.
A guard would check on them every 20 minutes and bring their meals and snacks to their cell. They would have family visits in a suite built for that purpose.
They would have access to a library, weight room, spiritual counselling, pool and education.
Simple clothing, shoes, slippers, PJ's and legal aid would be free, on request.
Private, secure rooms for all, with an exercise outdoor yard, with gardens.
Each senior could have a PC a TV radio and daily phone calls.
There would be a board of directors to hear complaints, and the guards would have a code of conduct that would be strictly adhered to.

The criminals would get cold food, be left all alone and unsupervised.
Lights off at 8pm, and showers once a week. Live in a tiny room and pay
$600.00 per week and have no hope of ever getting out.
Think about this (more points of contention):
------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE AUSTRALIAN CONSTITUTION They keep talking about drafting a Constitution for Iraq ... Why don't we just give them ours?
It was drawn up by a lot of really smart guys, it has worked for centuries and we're not using it anymore.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE 10 COMMANDMENTS
The real reason that we can't have the Ten Commandments posted in a courthouse or Parliament, is this -
You cannot post 'Thou Shalt Not Steal', 'Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery' and 'Thou Shall Not Lie' in a building full of lawyers, judges and politicians...... It creates a hostile work environment.

The government allows people to own as many houses as they like, they encourage it by allowing tax breaks (negative gearing), then younger people can't afford to buy a house because the investors have the cash behind them.

Wild theory: China

We've all noticed how cheap goods made in China are. There is no way you could make a HD television in Australia and sell it at that price, for a profit. Let alone ship it across the world etc. etc.

Because of the flood of cheap goods inflation has been kept low. As have wages.

The issue is not that house prices have gone up, it is that wages have not.

Think about it.

A million bucks! Woohoo!

1) They MUST retire.
Ten million job openings - unemployment fixed

No problemo! See ya dudes - I'm off sailing!! Except that 10 million skilled workers have left the workforce. My ex-boss tells me he's looking for more. It took years to train me so they might have to import some. Or probably even send the work overseas!

2) They MUST buy a new Australian car.
Ten million cars ordered - Car Industry fixed

Yoo bewdy! I could use a new car! Has to be Aussie eh? But all the aussie car manufacturers have run out because they don't have 10 million Falcodores! So the price has been jacked up to $500,000 shamolies EACH!! Following year, all goes back to shyte again.

3) They MUST either buy a house or pay off their mortgage -
Housing Crisis fixed

Great! A rental! Except that prices have skyrocketed because there's 9,999,999 other shmucks out there buying one. And I haven't got enough money after I bought my aussie made Falcodore. Ah crap! I'm in huge debt and I've got no job!!

4) They MUST send their kids to school/college/university -
Crime rate fixed

Too late. All done. And I'm not having no more kids for any government no matter what.

5) They MUST buy $100 WORTH of alcohol/tobacco a week .....
and there's your money back in duty/tax etc

Gave up smokes. Guess I'll just have to drink myself to death. Stuff the doctor and all that crap about my weight! Course the medicare fees could be a bit exxy but that ain't my worry - the government'll have to stump up that cash

6) Instead of stuffing around with the carbon emissions trading scheme that makes us pay for the major polluters, tell the greedy bastards to reduce their pollution emissions by 75% within 5 years or we shut them down.

Don't give a rats either way. Too pissed

Maybe it needs a bit more polish?

This has been done before, but I suspect that the name was Kevin Rudd before. Somehow I suspect it had a US President's name there before that...

Again, just for those that may have missed it, 10 Million people times $1 Million dollars is a real big number. 10,000,000,000,000 dollars. What is that? 10 Trillion dollars?

Do 'we' have that much?

I had a pretty good laugh at a similar solution I was sent for fixing the Pommie economy. Where it misses out is that the economy is not really disigned for sharing wealth. It is designed to make sure that wealth and control flows up, not down.

Otherwise it would work. Sure it is contrived, but so is the current economy. It ****s me when people crap on about market forces and and free economies.

My house mate makes replacement springs for sub par trains we buy from China to cart the coal that they buy from us. They will not buy the coal otherwise. Still keeps the old bastard in a job!

And then the aluminium plants. Google electricity concessions for them. From memory $110mil per annum in Victoria alone.

It is all a complete farking farce. Like George Carlin said, it is a club and you and I ain't in it.
