Had my window smashed today while windsurfing at crazy waves around 2-3pm , stole my wallet which was locked in glove box. (bad hiding spot) and managed to spend over $700 in 30 mins using my bank card with pay way.

I was parked at south beach car park near the pickled fig café so thought it would be safe there, but seems not.

Be careful everyone

Bugger!
We were packing up around 2 and didn't see anything. Had hoped there was enough activity in that car park for it to be safer.

Sorry to hear that, like Lao I always assumed that it was busy enough at that car-park to deter the local "pond life".
I've never noticed glass on the ground there before.

I guess they probably took advantage of a squall while people were sheltering. We were probably still out sailing.

You should be able to get reimbursed by your bank for fraudulent pay-wave transactions.

Sorry to hear about that. Definitely spoils your day.
I would have thought a wallet would be safe in a locked glove box, especially as it was out of sight. How did they break into the glove box?

if i was breaking into a car the glovebox , especially if locked would be the first place i would look . A screwdriver would make quick work of a glovebox . for me if i need to hide something like a wallet , the place i put it is under the third row of seats .

Looks like they used a crowbar or something similar to break open glove box.

Bank will refund money but can take up to 6 weeks.

They first used my card at woolworths at 2.13pm so only about 20 mins after I went into the water, so probably sitting in carpark watching our cars

It is surprising it doesn't happen more often really, as once we are out on the water we are usually gone for some time, and not watching the car (hope no potential thieves are reading this).
For while I left my wallet at home while windsurfing. Then I broke a UJ, only 5 minutes away from the shop, but I didn't have any money to buy a replacement. By the time I went home to get my wallet my window of opportunity had gone.

I generally find the the best place to leave my wallet is in a random location in the back of the car ... often takes me ages to find it.

Not a good idea to publish these ideas and teach them where to look...

tbh i dont care, thieves that frequent car parks for smash n grabs wont be on a forum like this and besides for them to get into the 3rd row in my car it will take them a few minutes as you have to get in the back and fold up the rear seats and then dig under the seats . And besides whenever i go to the beach i don't take my wallet , i take a few bucks that i slip in the key pocket of my wallet .

After having my window broken at Woodies I learnt not to take anything of value. Then at Pt Walter someone broke in and stole my jeans! Had to drive home in my wetty.

As for the card, when they first introduced PayWave the ads on TV had some guy in a shopping centre dropping his card and a cute girl picks it up and gives it back to him. I'm not sure I was the only one who thought the more likely situation would be someone in a hoody pocketing it before hitting the shops.... I've heard of people tampering with their cards to disable Paywave but I'm sure the banks could disable the feature if they wanted...but don't hold your breath..
