Yeah the Moreno's are in it. A lot of the girls have really stepped things up though, Lina in particular.
I didn't think about Marc Pare, he seems to be sailing very well but I don't think he's quite where Philip, Marcillio and Ricardo are though.

Monday:
If you've been watching the Pozo live stream you'll already know we have a heatwave in southern Europe and that high temperatures in the Canary Islands can ruin the seasonal trade winds.
The wind direction also changes slightly and that means patchy wind in the bay at Pozo. With the extra heat, these are sometimes known as kalima conditions, and they get hazy skies and with sandy air blown in from Morocco.

So that means it has been 4m windy and as light as 4.7m windy, but not the usual 3.7m weather. The patchy wind also holds back the windswell and reduces the nearby groundswell, so the waves are onshore and crumbly, and wave faces and jump ramps vary with tide height. That's the bad news.

So it's good news that they have at least started the event for the pros and they already have a result for some of the youth fleet.

Above all, what I'm getting so far is that it's really good we have this event back on after a two year (covid) break, and that the future of windsurfing is bright when you see some of the lesser-known windsurfers perform.
Half the men's fleet is now under thirty and some of the younger guys are completely ripping - but have had little heat training or competition practice.

So I'd love to predict that one of the new guys gets on the podium this year but that seems unlikely. It would be so cool to see one of the Japanese sailors make the top three in these port tack jump conditions - or indeed any of the new 20-somethings.

At the moment, I'd say this is anyone's contest, and the result will really depend on whether they get the strong wind pushing through. Sadly, it also seems likely that the wave quality is poor.

Stand out sailor so far is in the women's fleet. Her name is Sol Degriek, she's from Belgium, and she's 12. Amazing.
(It's probably worth mentioning that there must be a lot of proud parents watching this event. )

Thats a new one for me. I thought the trade winds the Canary Islands gets were due to a high pressure over the Azores.
Today, and for a few days, a low pressure to the north of the Canary Islands might be cocking the trade winds up.
www.windy.com/-Pressure-pressure?pressure,2022071312,33.340,-21.973,5

The wind recently has been from the north, so patchy wind in Pozo as it needs NNE/NE, the usual trade wind direction.

The high temperatures in the Canary Islands comes when the wind is from the east, from Africa. That is the Calima wind. I've been there when that has happened. The wind is from the east, light and stuffy. Easterly would be onshore at Pozo.

The high temperature in the Canary Islands is an effect of pressure/wind, not the cause.

ps, its spelt with a C as well. Calima.

I am wondering if the low pressure to the north has been kicked off by the higher temperatures in Africa and Iberian Peninsula though. I cant recall low pressure being there when I've been to the Canaries.
Portugal gets it's NNW winds off the high over the Azores as well.

My guess:
Women. A Spanish twin. Another Spanish twin. Sniady - has a decent back loop.
Mens. Traversa, Campello, Martin.

Well yesterday Lina lost to that amazing 12 year old at single elimination. What are the rules about double elimination? Will Lina get there for sure?

If Lina is out, my new prediction is Sarah, Daida, Justyna.

Marcillio looks on top form, Philip has anti gravity, Victor is technical with small waves.

Conditions looked better than previous days.
Yeah, I meant that Spanish twin winning btw
Offringa beat Sniady comfortably.

Back to the weather and the haze previously, its plausible that at higher altitude the wind was from the east dragging dust from Africa, and at lower level the northerly dispersed it south.

Well unless something completely radical happens in the women's 2nd elimination it seems like I've blown my cash.
Let's see what happens in the blokes division. I'm standing by my call there.
I'm not so sure about the little people call, big people have big gear so it's all relative.
Hopefully the conditions pick up !

I think the weather discussion remains key to answering the question asked.

It's now Wednesday and they have wind gusting to 30knots but there are no real waves and the wind remains a bit gusty, so they are 'on hold' for the men's pro fleet.

You can argue about whether the hot weather kills the wind or whether the wind direction brings the heat - but that's a bit chicken-or-egg. The reliable Pozo wind is usually a trade wind 'wind squeeze' where the wind hits the round island of Gran Canaria at a tangent, and so a small change in the gradient wind direction affects which beach gets the stronger wind.
I was there one year and the wind suddenly switched through 180 degrees at the hottest part of the day and you could see sailors planing in the opposite direction but on the same tack, and then twisters spiralled through the competition site, picking up gear off the beach.

What we do know is the cooler day yesterday brought better wind for Pozo and they had some leftover swell, whereas today the swell has gone.
The better news is that tomorrow is expected to be windier and the forecast going forward has improved a lot. There is also a new but modest swell expected - so tomorrow and Friday could be good days, and with further wind expected for the weekend.

So they are biding their time with round two at the moment and it's a bit of a gamble, based on the forecast.

On topic, I can tell you who I'd like to win - and that would be Brawzinho, followed by Koster and Marc Pare. That's because Koster is great to watch at Pozo, Brawzinho needs a win to take the world title, and it will be good to see some new names on the podium with Pare as my wild card.
With the small swell, it may well turn out to be a jumping and wave tricks competition, so that won't help the better rail-to-rail wave riders.

For those of you who laughed when I went a bit broody over a new 12 year old girl, I should point out that so far in the women's competition Sol is 5th overall. After two years of no competition for all these sailors it will be great if we see some more breakthrough names doing well, perhaps reaching the top ten.

The women's single elimination is done, but even if they hold a double elimination for the women the top three will probably remain the same, with Moreno, Moreno and Offringa.

I'm in the UK and we are on the edge of the European heatwave here, and with very little wind. So it would be nice to see some more wavesailing live-streamed into my shady living room while I pretend to 'work from home'.
