hi there,
I am trying to build my own beginner windsurf board. How necessary is a centerboard/daggerboard. Is it an essential thing or can I make up for it with a wide fin? I dont even know what exactly its for. I would be grateful if anyone could shed some light on this. thanks.

a centreboard is needed for non-planning winds,so you can sail back to where you started!

in very light wind with no centreboard [which provides sideways resistance] you will drift downwind fast.

in above 8/9 knots of wind a centreboard is not needed.

99.9% of boards do not have a centreboard.

you can buy a great 2nd hand board for a couple hundred dollars or less,so why make your own.
