might depend what mast you have.
if you have a np mast already then np might be the better option.

Back in the mid to late 80s Gaastra and Neil Pryde were the main brands. It was Robby Naish vs the NP guys and girls. Both brands are kewl so get whatever your mast suits. Or perhaps choose something completely different.

i don't think gaastra will rig well on a gun mast. they are constant curve masts leaning towards flex top which unfortunately is not gaastra orientated.

the neil pryde would rig on a gun mast though. i've sailed a couple of the pryde wave sails and they are very comfortable easy handling sails.
edit* you will find though the gun mast is a little stiff for the pryde but only just. should still work.

you could also look at simmer sails, gun sails (not sure if they are available in oz), plus loft and KA, () edit* which will suit it better.

the only sail "guaranteed" to work properly is a gun sail though.

my pick, (and yes everyone here knows i'm a KA fanboy), would be the KA kaos. for your age/size/weight it would work very well and they don't cost a mint.

i have a 2008 4.7m kaos that i reckon would get you going as soon as your current sail and a brand new 2011 5.3m kaos. you are more than welcome to rig them up for the day on your kit and try them out. can take the voodoo for a spin at the same time.

hmm, that's a problem, most sails in the range you are talking require a 400 mast.

if you get something with an adjustable head you might be ok.

Hey Switch,

if you want another option for 5.2, I just bought a loft 5.2 wave, it will run on a 430 SDM or RdM (I have NP 430 SDM). from Windsurfing Sales.
It only came in this week so haven't tried it.

Loft Lip Wave 5.2 was just over $500, cheaper than other NP I looked at.
Has adjustable head for diff mast lengths.

Contact Bud at http://www.windsurfingsales.com.au/products/sails/2011loftlipwave.php

just an option.

Gaastra changed from stiff top curves to constant curve in 2007.
www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Windsurfing/Review/Gaastra-Matrix-Review-Boards-Mag/

So I would guess that the Gaastra would rig better than the pryde on your mast... if you can, I would ask to rig the sail before you buy it.

you could be right nebs,

it's just that the peterman site doesn't reflect that. seems to depend on length of mast as they vary their bend curve from the small sizes to the big sizes. gun do as well according to peterman

there was a post on the gaastra forums i read where the gaastra guys refused to comment on their bend curve.

on a side note.

unifiber now make 3 different bend curves per mast length... they also have gaastra close to gun out of interest.

i rig my neil pryde 5.8m rs6 on the bottom half of a 490 arrows 100% with 23 cm's cutoff, and the top half of a 430 tushingham 100%

the join was a little loose which i fixed with some tape.

total length is 437, it works great, alot of this certain type of mast for sail is cobblers.

for larger sails 6m and above a lighter mast does make a difference.

How long is piece of string

Downhaul is about 2 metres and outhaul is around 500mm
Length of Kite strings I don't know but it'd be a simple matter of cutting the kite string half way along, measuring it and then doubling. [note: be careful not to accidentally puncture the kite bladder numerous times with the ice pick you need to undo the string where it connects to the kite]
