Hey Guys

I know it's early day's yet, but there's a chance we might get a really solid Westerly this Sunday. I'm Sydney-based, but don't mind driving as far North as Newcastle for a good flat water blast. Can you please recommend some spots from Sydney to Newcastle that would be worth checking out if it blows? Cheers.

Canton Beach if its a westerly but you need a weed fin. Look up Canton Beach on Youtube, I've posted a few videos from there so you'll get a bit of an idea what its like from both a GoPro first person and a third person perspective.

Thanks MobyDisk... I'll do some research and checkout your vids. How imperative is a weed fin? I only have the one fin that came with my 93ltr JP FSW... it's in the low-mid 30cm range and is a raked-style wave fin (I think). Can I get away without a weed fin?

Thanks again

I've had a fantastic session at Rose Bay in a westerly.

What sort of fin box does your board have? If its a powerbox I have a few powerbox weedfins including a delta. You could borrow one as I will probably use a board with a tuttle finbox.

That sounds great, Karl... thanks for offering. I've got a powerbox.

Are you planning on sailing Canton on Sunday? I've got to be in Newcastle by late afternoon, so will be heading up that way in the morning if the forecast holds up.

Please flick me a PM and let me know.

Cheers
Nige

P.S. Great footage. Makes me want to be out there right now instead of sitting behind this desk.

That's only a few minutes drive for me. It's a pretty thin stretch of water, but I imagine it'd be super smooth... is the wind affected much by the runways?

Best flat water I've sailed, wind is usually good, as good as a westerly can be any way.

Have not been near it since last winter, But if it blows west on Sunday I'll be there for sure. I assume it's shallow and weedy as it normally is. Last year the weed had died off after summer and it was clean and clear but it just produced more chop and not the flat speed strip we are use to seeing, I may know for sure on Sunday.

Flat water spots in a Westerly:

Sydney
- La Perouse if it's SW to W
- Kurnell if it's W to NW
- Foreshore Road in a Westerly is super flat but a bit too gusty for my taste
- Rosebay W to NW
- Palmbeach (Pittwater side) SW to NW super gusty but it's flat water.

South of Sydney
- Lake Illawara
- Gerroa if the swell isn't too big can be nice. Works best in a SW to W, NW can sometimes work, When I lived there I regularly sailed Westerlies at Gerroa but you pretty much will be alone.

North of Sydney
- Most of the Lakes North of Terrigal / The Entrance work really well in Westerlies. Had some fun sails when I lived up that way.

8ft swell and lightish westerly (offshore), I know what I'm doing and there's no sail involved!

The weed is only on the bottom and not a problem. The water level changes more than ever before now that the entrance is open to the tidal influence so you might have to walk away out to get enough depth at low tide. High tide is the best . The water is still flat on the Lee side of the sandbar in a westerly. Can't wait for the next westerly blow.

That's the custard Thanks for the info. I'll definitely give all the spots a run during the winter months.

So is anyone else having Canton for lunch on Sunday?
