Hi Folks,

Im just getting back into windsurfing after a few years off and ive bought a big pile of old gear. It all surfs fine and ive had a few days out in Botany bay, which have been good. However, due to space restrictions i need to get rid of some of the gear.

I bought one set of three sails (4.2, 4.7, 5.3) which all fit nicely on a single mast and boom. They are in ok condition.
I bought another set of sails (5.5, 6.5). They are in better condition, but each have seperate masts, and i'll need to buy an upgraded boom to fit them (the boom that fits them is in poor condition).

In Sydney (and surrounds) will i regret selling the larger sails? I anticipate that the large sails will extend the season a bit, but its a lot of gear to get/keep just to extend the season, and I think its likely that the small sail conditions will be more fun anyway. But if the majority of the time i'll be wanting the 6.5m sail i dont want to get rid of it.

For context i'll be surfing a 110L freewave board (i'll also keep a 150L board but i prefer to be on the small one), i weigh about 75kg, not doing anything fancy, just some freeride and chop hop, looking to learn a decent gybe and in the future get to a bit of wave riding.

Thanks for any advice,

Cheers,
Gavin

A board around 100 l is the most versatile, can take sails 5 to 7 and work in medium-light to strong wind. Dont get rid of the 6.5 might be your most used sail. I kept exact records for over 10 years and my most used gear before i started foiling was a100 l board and 6.6 sail.my weight is same as yours.

Keep the lot. When I lived in Sydney I used everything from 4.2 - 6.0.

for waves like 3.5 to 5.5 and for blasting 6.5 to 8.0. medium board if you only want to keep one board.

Sail range is the key, especially in Sydney! If you have to ditch oe of the sails, my advice would be to keep the 6.5 as its a very useful size for low to medium strength summer seabreezes, you can then switch down to the 5.3. Keep the smaller sails, you will use the 4.2 rarely and mainly in Southerly busters.

If you can retain all sails then do so, the 5.7 is a handy and versatile sail to use in between the 6.5 and 5.3.

Thanks everyone for the advice, I'll definitely keep those big sails. It'll double my rig size, considering I'll need the extra masts and boom, but sounds worth it.

Cheers all
