Hi, new to Sydney (and Oz) I gave Palm beach a go last weekend.

Parked here, right where the mark is. Got a parking fine, grrr !!

www.torlesse.com/windsurf/palm.htm

Can somebody educate me what I did wrong? sure I checked for parking meters...and in fact somebody else pulled away who looked like had been parked under the same tree all night. To make matters worse, I've lost the ticket from my windscreen...will the council mail me something?

Also...the sea plane...scared the pants off me the first time I saw it! thought it was just a jet ski until I turned around Any tips for avoiding, is there an area where it always lands to stay clear from?

Aside from that great spot think it will become a regular for me.

Cheers!

Andy

Yep. Good spot, but a bit hard (sink in mud) atlow tide.

On Thurs had a sail at Botany with Johnny from Scotland Is (out in middle of Broken bay).
He would rather do the 1hr 30min trek to Botany 'cos the conditions are the best, than sail out of his front door.
Lots of sailors, very social & great stretches of flat water

Oh yeah the mud - experienced that on Sunday afternoon. Dont mind mud as such, more what was living in it

Hi Andy

I'm just down the road in Newport and used to sail out of Palmie (but not recently). I think that whole lane-way is covered by the parking restrictions for the golf club. Pretty sure it's free parking but there is a time limit and I don't know what that limit is. I would have thought you'd be OK there for a normal sailing session.

The seaplane takes off from the decrepit looking hut further North along the beach. They are usually good at missing you and there is no defined run way area anymore but this doesn't stop them giving you a fright when they swoop down near you. In the Northeaster they will approach from the Sydney end and come down across the basin (opposite where you rigged) and land towards the shed. In a Southerly they fly anti clockwise around Barrenjoey and splash down in front of the Northern sailing area (Governor Philip park).

Anyway, hope this helps. Bummer about the parking ticket and I'm sure the council will send a polite reminder...

Hi,

Thanks for the info. I checked out Botany at the weekend but prefer sailing closer to home - the drive down there gave me a bit of a headache...

Long reef / Fishermans beach (for flatwater) looked really good too, although that might have meant sailing alone...just me and the sharks for company

Parking fines...its not Aussie ..is it...or is it?

crappy stingy Sydney...man I live in Sydney West and drive north to the lakes because Sydney is becoming a money hungry, council powerful, traffic strewn nightmare...

how much can we bare to pay for parking, after fighting traffic , If I have to pay for parking or fight to find a spot I'd rather drive 2 hours to the central coast lakes...but to be honest the damn drive is stuffing me for the sail, its time to reinvestigate the Penrith Rowing Stadium.

Lost interest before because of fluky gusts affected by the escarpment. but its close...mind you its not free so maybe I wont ...hee hee but I would rather pay for that than a fine as I am saving petrol and it goes into maintaining the lake./ stadium.

, is it back to my first sailing spot up Wentworth falls Lake? ..hee hee.

What I am saying is I feel so sorry for you getting a ticket doing something positive and healthy...man write them a friendly letter and say you had trouble sailing back in because you were attacked by a bloody big bird..whose propellor nearly gobbled you up.

man I am really disliking my home town of Sydney...I will be a sydney expat one day....one day....one day....the north coast continues to beckon.

Thought last time I was at that spot a few years ago, there was a 2-hour limit on meters?? (company picnic, I wouldn' sail there, would rather B.Bay on a westerly)

Anyhow, personally I would chase after the council to get a reprint - make the b...rds work for it a bit. But as a visitor do you really give a rat's a...e about paying the fine?
