Hi,

I'm putting together a map of spots to windsurf around Newcastle/Lake Macquarie, using the Google My Maps feature and making it public.

Here's the link to what I've done so far - www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1rct1ImzrTcA8RWvVwf7yPMQpEpI&ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&ll=-33.04004,151.647377&spn=0.208658,0.308647&z=12

It's open for public editing, so if you know a good spot around Newcastle/Lake Macquarie just add it in. Also if you want to fine tune what I've put up already, that's cool too. All the images I've used so far come from panoramio, e.g. www.panoramio.com/ for Marmong Point.

The only other question I've got is if any Google Maps gurus know how to get this to be searchable in the main Google search pages.

Hi rygle,

if you haven't seen it already, there's quite a few spots around newcastle on thewindmap.com which is a pretty similar idea:

thewindmap.com/#-32.83805835927704,152.127685546875,8

feel free to grab spots from there or add to it, it's publicly editable as well.

This is a great site. Thanks for letting me know. A link to this should be a sticky topic in the forums in my opinion...

2 suggestions;

1. Is it at all possible to get the mouse wheel zoom working like on normal google maps?

2. Is it possible to have regional tags for windsurfing spots, for example "Coal Point" could be under Lake Macquarie and Newcastle and possibly even Hunter. This might help people who are googling something like 'Windsurfing Newcastle' or 'Windsurfing Lake Macquarie' to get meaningful search results from the site. Also if you have links to regions on the site, you might get better general google page rankings, as you might get more external links to your site.

Valentine is great for Southerlies.My favourite spot.Good grassy area to rig + it gets a bit of wind so you can set up your harness lines etc.Water + loos.Cross shore and if you end up downwind you can walk back along the edge to get upwind.It gets some of the best wind in a southerly and can get quite large " rollers " for the lake in a big blow.
usable in a WSW - SSE best in Sw or S.Shallow shelving seagrass gradually to deep (beach start about 10m? out from the edge.)Hate to put a dampener on it but I have seen a shark there.Mainly in overcast conditions.Between Valentine & Bolton Pt.Plus is I havent been eaten yet!

Hi rygle
some info about Lake Macquarie for you.When I lived @ Morisset, Shingle Splitters Point, 6 mins drive was "the" place to sail. North or south access, bbq, toilets., no shop & watch out for the Razor Fish on the south side. Don't know why its called Raz..., because it's a plant, growing in shallow water. The head is like the head of an axe & can give you a nasty cut to the foot which like an oyster cut will take ages to heal. The plant has proliferated in the last few years, because of fishing regs introduced, the demand for them by local fishers as bait has dramatically decreased.
Rathmines is also a top spot, n or s winds
