Not sure if I'm imagining things, or coincidence, or what, but it seems like every time I spend a few hours in Botany Bay I feel kinda sick and/or lethargic for a few days after.

After sailing on Saturday I have had a slightly runny nose and been feeling very tired all week. I'd best describe it as a light flu. This is not the first time.

I know that the water in Botany Bay is terrible, but I'm dry 99.9% of the time. Still, I get splashed and take the occasional dip after a muffed gybe.

Anybody else noticed this? : \

Well, according to the article below
"Foreshores Beach in Botany Bay was again the only swimming spot to be rated "very poor"."Microbial water quality [at Foreshores Beach] is highly influenced by faecal pollution, particularly after rainfall, and is very susceptible to faecal contamination from the sewage overflows which discharge into Mill Pond Creek"

Top tip #1 Despite it being vile stuff, drink a can of coke after sailing and it helps kill the little nasties.

I laughed the first time I heard of it but after being ill too many times from the lovely waters of the Scottish coastline, especially after heavy rainfall. I started doing it and rarely got sick after it again.

I always gargle with Listerine after a big wet southerly.

Only after heavy rain.
Wait a day or two for the crap to sink to the bottom if you want to play it safe.
Which is the same story at most harbour beaches with storm water run offs.
With the dry weather we have been having water quality at Kyeemagh looks good to me.
There are two or three beginners who spend a lot of time in the water and come back for more every week so..

Funny you should mention it. I don't normally have any problems after sailing the bay (I stay reasonably dry) but I did have the symtoms you mention after the weekend sail. I even have a slight rash / blistering on the side of my nose. I thought it may have been a jellyfish bite as I did a big dunk on Sunday.

It was my first sail since last season season so I put it down to overusing underused muscles. But maybe ther was a higher amount of crap in the water.

Coke .... not sure if that toxin would be better than the water. :)

I've been sailing a few hundred metres further south for years now. The road that runs along the bay.

Better parking.
Better rigging area.
Better access to the water.
Better chop.
Better wind.
