Going up to visit my son who lives in Newcastle and thought I would like to try sailing on Lake Macquarie whilst there. What is the predominant wind in July and where are the best places to sail from? Any advice appreciated. (I live in Melbourne)

Hi Bill,

July can be blowing a gale or dead calm. Usually westerly or southerly at that time of the year. In a westerly lots of us sail from the tip at Marmong Point, in a southerly Valentine is usually the best. On a saturday we race formula or slalom from the clubhouse at Marmong Point.

Look forward to meeting you up here, feel free to PM me for more details.

Cheers
James

Westerlies are most consistent in Belmont Bay. The slip on the northern end of the bay gets big chop. Flatter if you launch from Belmont caravan park gate area carpark. Pain in that you have to walk the board up to the end of the point to launch to avoid the shallows + keep out past the markers so its deep but MUCH less gusty than Marmong , cross to onshore and flat water in near markers. Mud bottom if you do touch..

I was going to say bring some thick wetsuits as the lake is freezing but if youre from Vic and sail inland it will probably feel warm to you!

I think Port Phillip Bay is about 11 degrees at present. How does that compare???
