Headed down to Birubi to check out the conditions.
Swell is big.. no let me correct that... HUGE
Newcastle Port is calling 8.4 metres... Sydney spiked at 10.2 metres !

To put the picture into some perspective... the re-form beach break to the right of the headland is over head high. The waves are breaking approx 400 - 500 metres out the back !

Batten down the hatches

yeah... was going to sail Wanda but gave it a miss after seeing how big it was.

Ended up sailing Dolls Point... lots of bumpy stuff around but my 4.2 a bit big until there was a 30 minute lull of 35knts...

I would have rigged up if I could have gotten the car door open... super windy
Seriously though, there is/was so much water moving around out there. Was mesmerizing watching the waves implode in on themselves.

There's a couple of spots up here that may be worth a little look see tomorrow when the wind throttles back and the swell starts to refract and wrap into some off the beaten points and headlands

Time will tell

Sailed at darook park (port hacking bay surf). 2 to 3ft and 20 to 40 knots on my 4.2, was either over powered or under powered. was quite exhausting but was great to get out in some waves.

Towoon bay on central coast would of been the place to be today.

I sat in my car for about 45min looking at Peggy's in the Gong trying to decide what to do. In the end I took off my skirt and went out...holy ****. So much water moving around the north side of the reef it was insane. I wasn't game to head right in there as there was just too much current and getting caught on the inside would have been interesting....plus it was huge. So I just ended up catching...I don't even want to think how big bombs from the middle of the 'bay' (waves don't normally appear here) into the beach. Did that a few times then re evaluated and thought it was only a matter of time before myself/my gear gets vaporised so I called it a day. Pretty wild conditions that's for sure.

Windang looked unreal as I drove to work (was over mast high but breaking for about a kilometre). Was unreal when I drove home too. Work sux. Would have been an epic day.

WINDANG - Look how far out from the end of the walls its breaking

BELLAMBI - Where I was working. It would be good to sail here when the surf is too big everywhere else. These waves would easily be mast high still!

whyner is that off the north side of the bellambi harbour, before the break wall? I've always wanted to try that spot, but i'd say it works more in a SE rather than a S direction. I almost checked it today out but wasn't keen to venture out there by myself.

I went out at a secret spot that would have easily been bigger than anywhere else.
What scared me the most was how awesome I sailed.
No joke. Don't have to take my word for it. there was someone watching and they asked me to pass on their quote.

"You were so awesome, it was scary!"
- the very impressed spectator, 8/10/09

Kind of annoying in a way because I had to then spend the time typing out their quote, otherwise I wouldn't have gone on here to talk about it.

Its on the outside of the breakwall. Like directly east if the photo went onother 100 metres to your left you will see the breakwall. The spot north of the harbour could be alright too but it is more protected from the wind. It was a good angle. 43.5 degrees cross off

Yeah that's the spot I meant. I thought unless it's nuking though (as it was today) it's a bit sheltered in there when dead S, hence it being a bit better in a SE? maybe. Holds huge swell really well there.

What's the likelihood of a list being created of places that work in these kind of conditions ?
The idea being to get a few people interested in getting out there when it's on.
As CJW pointed out, heading out there solo is not always a motivational experience.

I had a look north from Ruby's cafe, didn't spend 45 minutes though. Is that also known as Peggies? Checked out Windang, I'd heard about it, a few lookers, no one out though, will go out there one day. Ended up playing it safe with a few others on the lake.

40 surfers out at Sandon Point right now

Peggy's is directly in front of Ruby's Cafe. North side of headland.

Yeh that southerly could have been gusting to 12 knots or more, a fair bit of pumping to get planing on a big slalom board. Is that what you call the waves? They still presented me with a challenge, good fun chasing the swells down. I'm basically a lake person.
