Coops35 said..Hi Everyone
Brand new here so please be nice.
We are just planning a bit of a road trip with our 2 young children and I was hoping to ask for some advice on good spots for some flatwater blasting in May June.
We're from Vic and so very used to the conditions at Sandy Point or Inverloch and wondered if there were any similar spots in NSW?
We're thinking about starting somewhere North of Sydney (as we've done most of the coast from Vic to Sydney)
We will also be camping and we have 2 young bubs and so somewhere with some amenities.
Thanks so much
Hi Coops.
The only place I'd sailed North of Sydney is Budgewoi on the Central Coast, which is a pretty special windsurfing spot. The wind can come from all directions that time of year, but Budgie has some very flat water for speed-type sailing in a Nor'Easter, Westerly and even South to South East and South West. It's very shallow and weedy though, so you'll need at least a 45 degree weed fin or better still a Delta no deeper than 22cm, but 20cm is preferable. and there's also plenty of good accommodation on the Central Coast.
If you're in Sydney and it's blowing NE, then sailing at Kyeemagh beside the runway is a pretty amazing experience. It's flatwater blasting heaven.
Further south you have Primbee at Lake Illawarra, which IMO is only worth the trip in a Westerly. If it's on, you could quite easily score a Nm PB with the runs being over 2klms long. This spot also needs a weed fin or delta no longer than 22cm.
Budgewoi and Primbee probably hold more GPS records than any other spot in NSW. It's not uncommon for people to get 35 knots and more at these spots.
I know there's some pretty awesome spots even further North, like Smiths Lakes and Harrington, but haven't sailed there, so will leave that for others to detail for you.
Have a great trip!
