Was thinking of launching from Kurnel, but a bit to close to work, where I'll spend 40 minutes driving to on Monday. Just stick to the runway? Is it worth the extra effort?

That's why I thought kunell would be good... heaps more wind when it's going to be sh1t ;)

After having sailed around this area for over 25 years I can say that Kurnell is always a fair bit stronger than anywhere else in Sydney but you need to allow for tide and obviously extra chop.

We sail a lot at both kurnell and kyemagh.
Generally we ride slalom gear so want to go fast.

If wind is only 15-20 at airport its usually about 3-5 knots stronger at Kurnell.
The trade off is kurnel chop gets a lot bigger. up until about 20 knots the chop is not too bad and you can ride along them to avoid too much bouncing. that being said it is usually good in one direction and then head on in the other. at 20 + really have to drop board sizes there to stay comfortable. at 25+ kurnel gets ROUGH , im talking 2 foot + wind waves put in the middle. it can be a lot of fun but on slalom gear its a wild ride.

The airport in comparison tends to be a bit lighter wind and has more holes in it on a moderate day but the water is relatively flat. Once the wind hits the 20-25 range tho the holes are usually strong enuf to plane thru so it becomes a lot better than kurnell for slalom boards. The flat water allows you to rig bigger sail and keep it controlled.

Tidal effects (seabreeze tides dont take into account daylight saving time)

1:08 pm : 1.86 H
6:42 pm : 0.19 L

Tide is pretty important at both locations. Sunday will be a one of the bigges tides for the month starting with a super high around 1 p, tp a very low at 8 pm. the current at both locations is going to be motoring around 4 pm. When possible you always want to the tide to be going WITH the wind. it tends to flatten it out.
Airport = tide flowing south along runway with wind from north east = run out tide - the flattest water at the airport is always the 2 hours beflre low tide.
Kurnell = tide running east against a NE wind means there will be some really big chop. and you will get a lot of standing waves. great for bump and jump but it will suck for going fast and gybing.

Other water users
Both sites have thier issues:
Airport has jetskis and fishermen and pleasure boats constantly passing thru area destroying the flat water. parking can bea pain on weekends but if the wind gets strong enuf it will drive a lot of these kretins away.

Kurnel has kiters - lots of them. they tend to kite up and down the whole stretch of kurnell and all hang around close to shore boosting.
Everyone hates kiters - even kiters hate kiters kurnell has plenty of newbs who body drag and drop their kites every where and lose their boards. like sailing thru a mine filed there some days. Parking and beach access are super easy tho. and everyone loves the chicks riding the horses along the beach

Finish sailing today bit bumby thought l would raised a concern nearly had a confrontation with a kiter about being to close (green naish) .another fellow windsurfer l think learner nearly got collected by his lines so we bothed moved further downwind & that was that. So keep a keen eye out when there is so many water-man out.l am not a hater of the overside but l wish some of them would respect overs EPIC DAY.
