At long last we have a viable alternative to replace the GT-31!

5hz or 1hz data logging of Doppler speed, positional data, accuracy data with full Speed Genie feedback in a compact form.

Battery Life 8 hrs. USB download and charging. 6 hrs recording capacity at 5hz. 33 hrs at 1hz.

Must be worn in a waterproof bag! Price the same as the old GT-31. Available February.

"As promised we have some interessting news on the GPS Devices. Last month we discussed some scenario's for the succesor of the GT-31. Today the developer of the GT-31 has announced the GW-52. The products is not yet on the market, but will be there very soon (February 2015) . Our tech guys did some testing with beta's devices in an earlier stage, and besides some minors we expect that the GW-52 will be fully approved for GPS-Speedsurfing.com.

So that's good news for everybody who is looking for a replacement for the GT-31 or wants to buy a new device to start GPS Windsurfing.... We will keep you posted in the next weeks about the official release date, availability & approval !"

Why did they not make it waterproof????

Missed chance, i guess i will stick to my GT31 ... and if that is broken, maybe buy a Suunto or something like that.

8 hour battery life is a bit disappointing too.

Sorry to hijack.... I have a gt-31 and a Suunto 2s... the difference is nominal. I carry both, but with the watch on my wrist it's really easy to see what my stats are while out on the water. I also use the Suunto for running, the gym and other training... it's great to keep track of my calories and HR. Best thing is, the Suunto is fully waterproof... I've had it for 12 months now and it's copped a beating out on the water and in the surf.

Suunto make dive watches... not much can will better that for ruggedness or being waterproof.

But the Suunto's arn't anywhere near as accurate as a GT-31... there is a specific reason we dont recommend many other brands (refer to the discussion about Canmore's), ie: for the use-case we have for windsurfing, nothing else is as verifiably accurate - even the GT-31 isn't accurate enough for alpha's.

Decent waterproofing would have made the GW-52 a worthwhile upgrade from the GT series GPSes. However I suspect most will hold onto their GT GPSes till they die.

What are the improvements other than the yellow colour? At least there is more chance of finding it when you lose it.

There are many more things we would have hoped for. Apparently, fully waterproof casing was going to cost far too much. I think it's the usb port that is the weak point.

But the functionality has been designed specifically for windsurfing. Nothing and no one else does that. No need to upgrade from GT-31 if it is running fine. GT-31 will still be better for some things with bigger memory and much longer battery life.

The device is based around a watch they make.

It is good that there is a model we can recommend to new team members now that the GT 31 is unavailable.
The short battery life is going to be a problem for people going for big distances though, although since it charges via USB, maybe you could put one of those small portable power packs (like you can use with your laptop, iPod etc) in your waterproof bag with the GPS, keep it connected and have extra power?

Windxtasy thats right - a rugged compact external battery pack will do the job - thats another BIG plus alongside the new compact size of the GW-52

Kato must be disappointed. What is the point of having storage for 33hrs of data at 1 second recording when you have only 8 hours of battery life?

Suspect they may have a back room full of round touch screens meant for the GW-51 which never took off.

With the dimensions of the box a screen from the GT-31 would have been better....

nah watch is water resistant + 14hour battery - looks alot like it though

Yep that's me. Water resistant is acceptable but waterproof is the holy grail. Everyone would snap them up if that was the case.

That was exactly my thought and I asked Locosys if this would work. It will.

I am almost certain it will be approved for GPSTC and GPS-Speedsurfing but that remains to be done. It uses the same engine as a prototype some of us tested and the data from that was excellent. Tom Chalko did extensive testing of the Prototype and his conclusion was that with good reception conditions it was more accurate than GT-31. According to Tom it also outputs the correct data for what we need to verify speeds.

YEP!!! and adding another storage battery to it is crap when you carry a min of 3 gps for record runs. I love that I can sail for a weekend and not worry about the battery life. Looks like I still hang onto what I have.

Maybe you only need 1 battery for your 3 gps's. You just need a big enough watertight container to hold all 4 doobies, and some where big enough to strap it to.
