I think we are all feeling it at the moment paulio both windsurf and kiters.
We havnt had a day over 15 knots in like 4 weeks very frustrating.
Still I have been on the water but only 10-13 knot stuff.

Guys c'mon. QLD isn't a notoriously windy state compared to the Canaries or Maui etc... buy some appropriate equipment!

It doesn't even need to be a formula board (although there's more of them around a cheaper options available 2nd hand) - just a 130l freeride board and a 9m sail.

I had a great sail with Tim P the other day at Mooloolaba. 10-12 knots out on the formula kit. Sailed from Point Cartwright all the way up to Maroochydore, back to Alex then back to the Spit.

Not only can you get planing in 10 knots, you can actually SAIL somewhere a bit more exciting than back and forwards down a bank.

Hard to believe formula has been around nearly 9 years and there's still only 4-5 guys who have them here in QLD, where its perfect FW conditions roughly about "every" single day of the week.

:-/

don't worry, I'm not batting for the other team - due to the endless lack of wind, and the high chance that january will be just as bad i couldn't tolerate doing nothing.

Although most on this forum don't want to hear this, it's worth giving it a try just for fun because it is really very easy, much easier than it looks (so long as there's wind to keep the kite in the bloody air) and nothing like learning to windsurf (no matter what the shops tell you ). I've had about 4 hours on the kite with dan and chairman, and today i've been body dragging about, can re-launch ok, and i feel ready to ride the board. Dans already on the board going back and forth. You will be shocked at how quickly you'll get to the point that i'm at. the hardest part so far was the initial 20 minute of crapping yer pants because you not sure what the kite's going to do , but after that it's gravy so long as you do it safely of course. i'm not sure i'd go out in 25+ knots with it though

P.S if you're reading this Paulio, thanks alot for the tips today

Is 'The Pin' deep enough for a windsurfer? Makes a great excuse to get a boat, can take the family with me etc. etc.

We didn't end up going to the pin, but I think JF has windsurfed there. Apparently it would be terrific for windsurfing. Hopefully i'll take windsurfing gear if i ever eventually get there

evilp - being at the level your now at and with your yachting interest, you'd probably really enjoy formula for light wind days. the equipments not really for beginners to learn on as they are more fragile and difficult to get into straps because of them being right out on the edges, but ok to learn to uphaul on if you don't drop anything on the nose of the board.

I second Gestalt's opinion - FORMULA RULES!!! If you can't plane on 5.0, try 9.0...duhhh...and if that doesn't work, go for 11 or 12!! Formula sailors have the mostest fun!!

I love my wave sailing but I do enjoy the odd blast up and down the coast on my hypersonic/8.5 when its light. The best thing is you can cruise around all over the place and all when its just a tickle over 10kts for comfortable planing :D

i don't want to sound like the robot on hitchikers guide but it's dark outside and once again the wind is blowing at night.

ohh dear........ it's all to much......... why me.

that said,

sailing formula is like driving a go kart.

low to the ground,
can change direction on a dime,
lets you feel the forces involved
and flat out pure adrenaline!

all in only 10 knots.

The only one downside of formula is the conditions are just too perfect here in SEQ for it.

I've decided over the Xmas period I'm not going to sail on weekends anymore because I've been sailing every single of day of the week the past few months as the wind has been so good; I need some more spare time :-/

Less jetski and amateur-kayak traffic on weekdays as well ;)

I don't even OWN a sail as small as 5.5m. When exactly would you use that in QLD? In a cyclone?

Hijack imminent!!!

Gunna sound dumb with this one......but here goes!

Never sailed formula (have seen the boards & rigs), but frequently out on my 165lt Xcite with a 7.5 sail (thinking of getting an 8.0-9.0) in light-mod winds, and have a blast.

What's the advantage of formula, (other than racing) over large freeride? Is there a major diff? or is 'formula' a general term for 'big'?

Hi Brett are you up here in Qld at the moment.
Believe it or not we actually do use 5.5 even smaller if your using wave sails, certainly not lately though it's been very quite.
anyway hope it improves soon.

We could probably find some canals with enough light, to go windsurfing ...at night, in a canal, on the Gold Coast. Any takers? I'll bet you an arm and a leg you (it) could tear it (you) up. Any bites? What size fins? I'm just baiting you.
