yesterday i flew from hobart to sydney to brisbane to port morseby, all in the name of work. what really stood out in all those flights was the flat water speed sailing potential of the water next to the runways at the sydney airport. are you allowed to sail there? and is it as good as it looks?
mind you i went down to the beach here in port moresby this arvo and there was a crackin' good sea breeze, but my gear is (i duuno, i'll guess) 3000km away. (sad)

PS. and by the way, it was a beautiful clear morning, and to all you sydneysiders your city and surrounding waters looked spectactular. if i was an international tourist i would have been saying " i want to live here " , but luckily i live in tassie so i know better

I have thought this as well!

I reckon Kiters would be a definite NO, but Windsurfers?

It's a very popular spot.

Sailboarders only! down wind (aiport side) of tall hotel.

Freeride chop blasting, avoid the jellyfish they cause spinout when attached to fins.

Sail from beach right up to rock wall of runway, gives a new perspective of how big Jumbos are.

With all of the jumbos taking off does it get gusty?

On a windy day it's not gusty at all but on the lighter ones you can see and use the gusts well.

On my formula kit on days when there isn't enough wind to get planing you can ride the wash from the planes for up to a few hundred metres if the wind angles are OK. Also been slammed by the downdraft a few time when straigfht under the flight path. Can hit you pretty hard.

Sydney aiport rocks. I have not found the Jumbos a problem, but are a little noisy when taking off. There can be a lot of chop though, so it is really not an all out speed spot. Although in a westerly, the little pocket of water on the northern side is a lot flater and is good for some speed runs, although it is a much shorter run, say, 500m instead of the 2km on the southern side of the runway.

It's lots of fun in a southerly as well when the swell really builds up.

From now until April there are regular NE seabreezes often around 20-25 knts. And the water is already speedo's temperature!!

On a good day I have counted around 70 sails out there. The kiters aren't allowed near the runway, so they go out at Dolls Point, a couple of kilometers south of the runway.

Drop in some time!!!!

If you time it right and gybe at the tip of the airport runway you can pace an accelarating 747 as it spools up. Pretty fun thing to do although it doesnt last long as it just blows you away.
Downside, stink of jet fuel!!!
Also watch out for psycho jet skiers, they only have one speed, flat chat.
As Harrow says there are heaps of guys out most days and its a great spot for all types of sailing. Heard yesterday was cookin'.

Sounds great! For future reference, where do you launch?

Anywhere from Bestic st end of the beach at Brighton Le Sands all the way down to Dolls Point is launchable. Most boarders tend to launch from Bestic st (Airport) end.

End of Bestic St. Good grassy rigging area. The council has even installed regularly spaced taps to rinse your gear.

Grant, sorry to hear you missed out yesterday. It was solid. Don't tell me you we're working.

Hey Paul, hard to admit i was working and missed it. Got the NE on Wed but heard from mates it was crankin'.
Bugger!!!
Another thing, parking is limited in summer so get there early. Lots of large family groups and tourists.
You can work your way up under the airport runway for some speed runs.
The airport authority put a line of yellow bouys along the runway and your not supposed to go any closer. Who would want to, its all boulders anyway.
Hope your not out there today Paul[}:)]

Good point about the parking. Although I reckon we could get 30% more cars in if people would stop leaving 1/2 a car space between the next car. Also, there should be a parking restriction a bit like the disabled parking at shopping centres. "Sailors only", and you get a ticket if your car isn't full of gear.

Now that would be a great way to impress all the different ethnic mixes. [}:)]
Lets get a petition started and by the end of summer we will have about 70 signatures.
More than enough for Rockdale Council to make us the dominant force.

Hey
lets register windsurfing a religion. We worship the god of wind and water, and as minority group we should get preferential treatment.
