I have a wave riding board shaped by micheal peterson in excellent condition for its age, hardly a ding in it . The board was shaped in merimbula on the nsw south coast and has the merimbula sailboards logo on it aswell his trademark signature of 'micheal'. Have been thinking of selling it,might be on display at the mambo this year.Any thoughts of what this board may be valued at ?
Yep its a glassed board, its intersesting as i know that mp was a famous surfer not a windsurfer. His surfboards in good condition sell upwards of 1500 dollars,i sold one 12months ago.I would probably think that this board would be of interest to collectors, particularly those chasing mp boards.Cheers for your replies.
Hey pete, if your interested ask around down in Manly for a guy called Mick Mock. He is the guy that organises the big surf auctions etc. Usually one or so a year at Mona Vale pub. I reckon if you ask in most of the surf shops in Manly you should be able to find him. I'm sure he could give you a decent idea of what its worth especially being a MP. Hope this helps
Im currently having the board looked over by a mate who shapes and collects boards,to give it a spit and polish.I will show it at the mambo and look forward to chatting to anyone wishing to check it out, over a schooner or two !Will post some pics soon for those who wont be there.
gees i got a mint condition MD and a maddog in my shed, both are glass with custom fluro paint. they look great hanging on my wall.... even got Pryde fluro straps on one of them.. any takers
When I was in VIC last year, I think there was a surf museum in Torquay, where ever it was, I missed seeing it unfortunately. Since Michael Peterson was such a huge part of surfing evolution and history, perhaps they may be interested
I have spoken with both bob and geoff down there a few times over the years and have always found them to be really helpful. Thanks for your suggestion haggar i will have a chat with them.
Have to agree with ben severne, read the mp story .... its a cracker !
have taken some pics of the mp board and for those interested i have listed the board on ebay.Cant figure out how to load pics onto this forum. Not sure if anyone saw but i put the board on the platform at fordies during the mambo on the friday.
seems seabreeze forumites themselves have set the price for this board looks like paying high prices for rare sailboards now can be attributed to these two threads.
seems a new guy? comes in asking prices ...of coarse there's all the usual its only worth a coffee table..but someone starts suggesting there could be worth in the collecting side and bango its put up for collector surfboard prices...
unfortunately collecting is no longer for the genuine collector...in this era collecting is for the 50 something who couldnt have their GTHO or their Monaro or Their Michael Peterson in the past when they were struggling family men...but now they are rich capitalist swine with more money than they know what to do with they can just use that excess money they have from their extremely sucessful advertising/coporate law/swanky business and plunge it into toys that can grace their driveways or in this case hang next to their autographed footy jersy from the last Sydney all boys representitive australian footy club run by some amazing cinema star.of coarse it will never see water again but perhaps a red wine may sit on its deck next to the little squares of fancy cheese.
Collectors were once the type to be buried alive by a pile of their own collection or newspapers [how do i know i was one of them now struggling to kick the habit] ...not the nuovo rich who would be buried with their money....and are we actually seeing with this auction the start of the end for normal windsurfers owning interesting relics.. will this put us into the cringable halls of the surfboard collector..generally a person who has never been on a surfboard or says its past my prime to surf anymore but i used to when i was a lad before i started my "Business of dreams" that allows me to pay good money for surfboards so that true collectors can no longer afford them.
is this the way it will be or am i really only talking "tongue in cheek" here because I havent been posting for a long time...mind you i have a couple of fibreglass sailboards that any of the nuovo rich reading might like to hang next to their autographed bradman ball protector or their pretentious limited print of some bathurst GTHO signed by the chief pit mechanic with an oily screwdriver which had just adjusted the carby that won bathurst..
Yes i am talking tongue in cheek but with venom for I am a recovering collector very happy to allow any of my collection to grace the nuovo riches boardroom ...for a price...so if you want a goggomobil to put that Michael Peterson on top off give me a call...seriously.
copies of this speach can be obtained in the foyer
I reckon donate it to some place in Queensland after all that is where he spent much of his youth and many of his family are up this way...maybe Gail at Goodtime who is famous for watersport memorabelia could advise you. MP is an icon of Qld surfing
