thought this migh inspire a few to make some movies for youtube of their local spots and them grinning......

it's easy,

1. copy video files to hard drive,
2. open in windows movie maker,
3. deleted the crap, including shaky camera work.
4. save as mpeg, (save as same size as original) ie. 640x480 etc.
5. open up new file in windows movie maker
6. import favourite australian band for music.
7. press the auto movie button (music video setting)

enjoy the show.

ie. the software edits it all for you, with fades and cuts, etc.

to avoid steps 1-4 just scrub the vid when saving from your camera. this will also keep a better resolution.

examples.

(point and shoot camera in video mode, clips recorded were between 5-10 sec llong each)

(done with proper video camera)

I just did a google on "mod to mpg" and found a couple of things you may want to try:

"The MOD file format is just a glorified MPG file. The MOD file type is simply an MPEG-2 video file with a different file extension. The easiest way to convert MOD files to MPG is simply by renaming the .MOD file extension to .MPG."

Another solution may be if your camera came bundled with CyberLink PowerDirector. It appears as if that software will allow you to convert the .mod file to avi or mpeg (or mov)

the vids are pixelated because youtube crunches them when you upload. all of the vids are crystal clear in the originals. except the last one???? probably something i did?????? too many conversions etc.

the point and shoot camera with video mode was a Lumix i think. funny the vids seem to be better quality then the photos it takes. most of the vids were taken by Dylan. the camera saves into .mov format as per lots of point and shoot cameras. i used xilisoft to convert them to avi ti use in movie maker.

i don't know what the video camera was. i was given the wmv files on cd and movie maker reads them. all of the video camera work was done by Rhonda.

i am not that familiar with the software however,

to convert files, xilisoft is good,
for something with lots of options and more technical you could use Megui or vitual dub mod these will allow you to use lots of different codecs and adjust size and add filters etc.

to convert from avi or mpg back to dvd then dvd2avi is wicked.

for the editors. all of the inline editors suck, they don't allow really accurate timelines. i used a few and found the automovie section in windows movie maker is excellent. syncs and edits to the music beat when you use music video mode.

definately the way to go is the non linear editors. like, vegas pro, premiere, avid, and the apple one.

i have done a lot of audio production and realised very quickly that inline movie editors don't have the goods.

currently i am doing a manual version of the above vids but i'll be making the decisions on cuts and fades instead of the computer. i am using Vegas pro 8 and find it excellent.

has jog, very good timeline, drag and drop etc etc but for me the most important thing is that it loooks and feels like cubase the audio software i use plus i thin it accepts .mov files

also, the less conversions the better. and scrub on the way in if you can. saves loads of time and keeps the quality up because you can avoid the first 4 steps.

the important thing is that prior to those 3 vids, i had never attempted to make a video before. it was so easy with auto movie now i got the taste for it i want to do my own.

that said i would still use the auto movie function in movie maker to do 3-4 minute clips because it seems to work so well. i am only turning to vegas becase i want to do a 20 minute movie.

How do you do that? I don't have mpeg choice in the "Save Movie File..." in mine.

Yes, YouTube sucks because of the stupid resolution that implies worst-case intrapolation of pixels.

Question is though: why does it work for some people? My posts work great on some sites such as Zapiks, which probably happens to be 640x480, but my posts always come out bad on YouTube whereas others are fine. How do they do it?

I would add that the exporting of AVIs slowed down or mixed clips always creates HUGE files - something about removing compression at frame level, I suppose. I use Solveig to clip AVIs without that overhead, including mutes. Great product amongst freewares.
