Hi all, I need to book out accomadation now if i want to go anywhere with the family at xmas . I am hoping for some good suggestions on were to go . I would like to go somewhere different & am looking for a place that can offer me windsurfing & enough activites for the wife & kids . I also dont mind a surf & kids love the surf but am not really at the wave stage yet so flat water for sailing.I live in sydeny & will be driving i dont mind a nice drive in the country but i think they might object to a drive to W.A as much as i would like it .So i have sort of been limited to the east coast Wouldnt mind if the accomadation was a reasonable price either .It would have to accomadate 6 people( 2 adults and 4 kids).We also have camping equipment but i think the wife would prefer accomadation .

Jervis bay, close so it won't be to long a trip for the kids....or you. Jervis bay has some good bump and jump conditions and Sanctuary point is only 15 minutes away and is one of the best flat water spots you'll find, it also has one really kid friendly beach with shallow clear water over white sand. Dr surf has a few houses in the area that I've stayed in and they are well priced, but most of the real estates do holiday rentals. Then you have everything else Jervis bay has to offer, Diving, whales, dolphins, fishing and the list goes on.
You can also make a quick dash up to Gerroa for some surfing, SUP or wave sailing....Other then that pack your bags and head for WA, if it's on you'll never forget it...ever.

Why don't they have a cheaper service to get to WA on the train? Imagine a nice leisurely 2 or 3 day trip on the train and being able to get off and drive your car in WA and sail a few weeks at some of the most reliable spots in Australia.

anyway...

Are there any decent flatwater sailing spots on the far south coast? Jervis Bay is good, and plenty of places within easy reach.

Similarly, Winda Woppa up north is good, if not a little bit too quiet.

Are there any good sailing spots up Port Macquarie way? I went there on an organised bike ride a few years ago and I was surprised with how much I really liked the place.

(can you drug them, shuffle them onto a plane, and convince the family that they are still in NSW even though the sun is setting in the wrong direction?)

funny I've always seen the camping there, just never thought one could camp there !

Thanks it all sounds good i will have to see what the rest think, actually we have been looking at staying at narrabeen moby , its nearly booked out now & I dont need to get a camper van to block everybody. ive got my truck its bigger.

If you're thinking local them what about Kurnell, there's a van park there, right on the water and only a short drive to Wanda for waves.

We went to forester last christmas stayed at big 4 at red head kids had a great time surf was alright a couple of times ,i also sailed out throught the surf a couple of times but it was too light i didnt really get much sailing in . Narrabeen has the added expense of parking mtrs unless i make a trailer & cycle from caravan park which could be a bit of fun. Kurnell ive never been too so it might be worth a look at were in javis bay is a good place to stay .
Can u sail on burrill lake theres a big 4 there looks like good stuff for the kids ?

On of the absolute gems of a house that I booked was on the beach at Vincentia. Not a new house, but right on the beach and close enough to Sanctuary Point that you can drive there in 10 minutes if the breeze picks up.

We've stayed at Vincentia and there are a few good places right on the beach which gave us direct access to the water - was able to walk the board and rig down to the beach.

Jervis Bay is magic when the wind is up - beautiful clear water and some nice ramps.

BUT the downside is that the wind is not that reliable. In two weeks I only 4 sessions - and 4-5 days of unbroken heat is not unusual according to the locals I met.

If you do stay at Vincentia, make sure it's off the main road - it gets heaps of traffic and if you're staying in a place without air con, and have the window open, you won't get much sleep.

Over the years I don't think I have noticed much of a difference in forecast and the eventual wind, between Port Stephens, Sydney, and Jervis Bay. If it blows a NE in any of them it usually blows in all of them.

I think in Southerlies, the further down the coast you are the stronger they seem.

The last two seasons have been very ordinary, but when there is a good one, there are noreasters everywhere up and down the coast.

You're spot on. I've done Jervis a few times - nice, but no different than Sydney.
I too find conditions the same overall along the coast, esp. the summer NEs.

Never understood those guys driving 100 miles all the time for a chance of catching better winds. A change in scenery is nice though.
