G`day all I`m a newbe to this site and havn`t done alot of regular sailing for a long time,I got rid of my old bic (astro rock) those of you over 35 would remember those it was about 120lts big slalem board.I could plan along in the straps and harness ok,and occasionaly waterstart, can`t gybe,,At a swap meet bought a 2005 starboard sonic 100lt taking out a few times under-powered,I`ve read that this is a high wind race board but the carve is a less tecnical board to ride and easier to handle.my question is how much differnce is there ,and should I try to swap .I`m 75kg 5`11``I`m getting down sandy-point tues,wends.Any-one down that way shout out Lozza!! and i`ll come over for a chat,,,,,cheers

well the best way to describe the difference is with cars, the Carve is like a V8 comadoore or falcon (won't be one sided here) so reasonably fast handles the corners o.k cumfy ride, where as the Sonic is more like Formula 1 car, fast in a straight line, fast around corners, but not everyone can drive one, well not at it's full potential.. the Sonic will eat the carve for breakfast in the right hands, a bit more technique is involved to sail one.

Thanks mate, good way to discribe it,sounds like I`d be more suitable to the carve,I`ll be going out a fair-bit over the next week or so but might try and swap it,It is a 06 100lt as new and new NP cover,Keen for a carve 111 wood same cond be ideal,Don`t like my chances ,I know how popular they are.

Go the carve 111. Sonics are super technical to ride but get it right and they are lightening fast. With the carve they are still fast but a lot more forgiving and enjoyable.

Good luck finding someone prepared to give up their carve. The new Futura are appartently just as easy to ride but a bit faster than the old carve.

New futuras ae good. I went from carve to futura..much faster and turns better. I dropped 20 litres moving from a 121Carve to 101 and can barely notice the dif as far as volume for planing. Futura is stable fast and turns well. More of a WRX i suppose

Thanks guys,I had the sonic out at Sandy point much to my imbarashment, strugled up-wind in marginal wind, can tell it would be a great board in the right hands,I think I`d have more fun and more hours on the water with a carve, thats what it`s all about eh,
