SHQ in Melbourne used to do winter trips every year.
Not sure they still do but I'm sure Mike or Ivan can give you a contact over there.
If not they used to go to Plantation Island, you could try them for accommodation & meals but you would have to take your own gear.
There is another guy on the mainland over there with some sort of resort but not sure where or how good it is.
Try searching in this forum as there was lots of discussion a couple of years back.
My experience was flat water, light wind 7.5M 120L+ type sailing but like everywhere it can get really windy at times

I sailed FLAT water No WAVES where I was

Wind was dodgey... Reef was to be avoided (unless diving or snorkling)... Bounty Rum and Fiji Bitter ALL good...

WA is a better place to sail. Fiji is a better place to unwind, hook into some Fiji time and drink rum

Lord Howe, do you live there If so, a windsurfing holiday to WA a much better idea... Bit more open space

G'day "Lord"
Haven't been there for a few years but best for flat water is Nananu-I-Ra a small island north of the mainland about a 3hr taxi ride from Nadi airport.
From about now to August 20-25 knots usually 8days on 3 days off.
Cheap backpacker accomadation, take you own gear 105L FR, sails around 5.5 give or take a metre. Definately booties lotsa coral at low tide. Google around for current wind, accomodation etc

surf happens when wind no good for sailing.
In winter lots of great SW which is onshore on the lagoon.
is a pretty magic place to sail when it's happening

Went to Nananu-I-Ra 3 years ago in August for 2 weeks. It was organised by Simon at gowindsurfing.co.au but believe he has since gone out of business. He supplied all the gear and we stayed at a small backpackers on the beach. All my comments apply to this island.

Found this www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4730

OK so I'm a spoilt West Australian and I was hoping for 20+ knots every day in warm water & weather. Had warm water & weather but not much wind. The ocean looked good and gave the indications there was plenty of wind but whatever there was just didn't have any guts.

The gear supplied was predominantly 120 litre boards and bigger, sails were generally 6.5m plus. So if this is what you want to do then you will have a ball. Several of the guys present were Kiwis so they really enjoyed it. Maybe I was there at the wrong time but his gear didn't suggest he was set up for 20+ knots.

No waves on the island at all, its surrounded by reefs that are fantastic for snorkelling and diving.

The only water on the island is what is collected in rainwater tanks; global warming = less rain so water tanks were almost empty so it was 30 second showers and even talk of shutting down the place early due to lack of water.

There was an other "backpackers" 100m down the beach from us that had gear for hire. Possibly run by Warren Francis - his gear then was not the best then and not high wind gear.

Looks like he has upgraded and built new accomodation, found this after Googling ww7.extremesportscafe.com

So I guess my comments are the same as Pugwash's.

Electricity was from diesel powered generators that were shut down at 10:30 pm and started at 8:00 am.

Fijians are great people who looked after us well.

I'm off to Cocos again this year.

What about warren francis, doen't he still go out there? - Windsurfing Safari's - Many Years ago I went to Kadavu looking for a location and found a great site but with accom a good 40 minutes to the spot. So we gave up on that idea.

Kellie used to take groups to Fiji years back. I went one year when we were at Nananu-i-ra and it was great. Not great wind, but very relaxing.

In general the wind was variable at best, but I still know people who go there every year to sail.

I am planning to work one of the photos from Fiji into a poleys t-shirt design, it's from about 11 years ago, so it will automatically look retro!

Dylan.
