Went to Nananu-I-Ra 3 years ago in August for 2 weeks. It was organised by Simon at gowindsurfing.co.au but believe he has since gone out of business. He supplied all the gear and we stayed at a small backpackers on the beach. All my comments apply to this island.
Found this
www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4730OK so I'm a spoilt West Australian and I was hoping for 20+ knots every day in warm water & weather. Had warm water & weather but not much wind. The ocean looked good and gave the indications there was plenty of wind but whatever there was just didn't have any guts.
The gear supplied was predominantly 120 litre boards and bigger, sails were generally 6.5m plus. So if this is what you want to do then you will have a ball. Several of the guys present were Kiwis so they really enjoyed it. Maybe I was there at the wrong time but his gear didn't suggest he was set up for 20+ knots.
No waves on the island at all, its surrounded by reefs that are fantastic for snorkelling and diving.
The only water on the island is what is collected in rainwater tanks; global warming = less rain so water tanks were almost empty so it was 30 second showers and even talk of shutting down the place early due to lack of water.
There was an other "backpackers" 100m down the beach from us that had gear for hire. Possibly run by Warren Francis - his gear then was not the best then and not high wind gear.
Looks like he has upgraded and built new accomodation, found this after Googling
ww7.extremesportscafe.comSo I guess my comments are the same as Pugwash's.
Electricity was from diesel powered generators that were shut down at 10:30 pm and started at 8:00 am.
Fijians are great people who looked after us well.
I'm off to Cocos again this year.
