I know Arctic Windsurfer some videos on camera mount setups, but I can't find them on youtube and I can't remember if the camera was mounted on one side or both.
Is there any issues with the sail cloth getting torn?

I like the idea of using steel wire, I was going to use fishing line. I also noticed that with the GoPro 3+ you can buy a float that attaches to the back of the camera, so if it does come off, maybe I can still find it. I have attached some sample pics from the insta360, I attached to the back of the boom and to the mast at the cutout as I was a little bit concerned about the sail fabric.
I am interested in being able to see my body, so I correct and work on getting better.
Went to aliexpress and got some aluminium extension poles 25cm x 2 so maybe I can get the camera away from me and get a better view.

I think it might make the setup easier to break though.
If I can only have the camera mounted on one side then I think I will choose coming into the beach as wave riding is what I really want to get better at, but both sides could also be great.

I use a GoPro hero 5 session. Great image, inexpensive (relative), super light, low water footprint, waterproof.

I use the camera for work-related stuff so I am hesitant to take it out in waves etc...
Was thinking about it for a while and thought why not get an older generation of gopro (maybe a 4 or 3+) and if I lose it then there won't be any tears.
I have a flymount mount which is fine on the boom but I was thinking of mounting it on the mast.
With this setup do you get to see yourself on both tacks?
How do you angle and position the camera?
Any advice or better suggestions when it comes to camera and filming etc...

I use a fly mount with a hero 6 and 9. Just make sure the camera has a leash as well as the fly mount. Google leashes..

I use a flymount on the mast just above the boom with a 20cm aluminium extension and GoPro 360. Works great and just need to make sure it stays in alignment.
I've used the same setup with GoPro 7 and a few angled brackets so I can pivot it. Needs adjusting after each tack/gybe or it faces the wrong way.

For your insta360, don't give it up, use a leash. The 360 cameras are way better for windsurfing (IMHO)as you can reframe the shot after the fact. So many times with a conventional goPro the shot is not quite right, it tilted slightly whilst sailing or just completely misses the really interesting stuff happening just a few degrees off camera/behind you etc.

For the 360, try a unicorn/reindeer helmet mount or backpack mount (or even back of board mount). Any kind of mast/boom mount is only good at best for one sailing direction. My preference is helmet mount as much shorter pole. I use one gopro stick on base for the camera and another for the leash. These things do not fall off...Just try taking one off without the aid of a hot air gun and lots of time! I made my own mount, you can get the general idea here:- www.prusaprinters.org/prints/104365-gopro-max-360-anti-tilt-pole-mount After nearly one year of use the leash was called into action once (only because I was in a rush to sail and didn't push stuff together properly)

For the leash, try diabolo string. It is incredibly strong, comes in lots of colours (or not), super flexible so is easy to tie knots and feed anywhere (where steel wire is difficult/harder and lasts a long time in the salt. You can buy in 2m lengths (or rolls of 25m+) at any circus/juggling store/ online (just search diabolo string). Whilst you're at it get yourself a diabolo or two, great skill toy to play with whilst waiting for the wind. Way harder than it looks. Last time I looked people are doing 8 high and 5 low (I am proficient at two and can hold 3 for about 5 secs after 16 years of trying..but I am at least 3 times their age).

Use your cheap standard gopro mounted at back of board pointing back for some awesome wake shots (leash around foot strap) or maybe forwards looking. However I use the remote on my wrist to only turn on when there is chance of something interesting happening (or yell loudly to use the vocal option which only works when sailing slowish). Typically this gives around 3hrs+ on water use for me. You can also highlight your vids (gopro have had it since the early days of Hero+ and Hero4) by yelling loudly or some sort of gesture and gopro puts an indicator on video to make it quicker to find interesting bits on your vid, as you right...the hardest part of any video stuff is searching hrs of video for that 5 secs of interesting stuff you think you filmed.

I've yet to use a gopro remote, sounds like a great idea. And yeah, sifting through all the footage is a pain. I do swap batteries and mount it so the door is outward facing, and I'm going to end up deleting a bunch of footage just because of gigs and gigs of boring footage taking up space, especially for the larger 360 clips.

Helmet mounts make switching it off and on easy but I've had issues with the 360 needing to pull the battery out to get it to reset and turn on. Also if I have to carry a big sail like a 9.0 on my head I don't want to have the camera or mount there damaging the sail, so I end up attaching my helmet to my harness to get it out of the way. Lots of stuff to get in the way of sailing!

you can see my helmet mount tilts way back. Never hit sail once with this thing and with no wind around here almost always using the big 8.6!

That aluminium extension is the same/similar to what I was using. How do you lock it in place? Do you use a screwdriver for a final couple of turns? I used the plastic tightening piece (supplied with it) and cracked the plastic on the screw. End result, of what I thought was tightened, it just slowly lowered until it was just off going onto the mast.
The bloke in the youtube video below is running a 1.2m pole out of the front of the mast, which looks like a great angle.

If the go pro is on top of the mast I can't tell if it's on or off. I just put it on and leave it till it runs out of battery.. maybe I should try the remote on the boom view as the hero 9 has a front screen so you can see what it's filming. At least then I can see if it's on or off.. unless the screen times out and goes black ?
Anyway I'll have to give it a go as the best footage always seems to happen right after I run out of battery..

The gopro remote is great, old version could control some crazy number (50ish) cameras but the new one can control 5. (doesn't seem to matter if 360 or standard) Once you connect remote to GoPro you can tell (on remote display) whether the gopro is asleep or not. Its still connected by low energy blue tooth. Hit the remote button and the gopro wakes up (about secs), it then stays awake for the specified time in your settings (5 min or so) and you can see the camera ready. Hit the remote again and it starts recording and you see the video number and time elapsed for current recording. Maybe 1 sec delay to start recording. Hit remote again and it stops recording. Camera then goes to sleep after your specified time period. I haven't tried multiple cameras on water at once using remote but is on the bucket list. The gopro battery does go flat quicker once you've connected remote but it still give you way better on water time and no faffing around wondering whether camera is recording or not. (Important note though, if you have weird issues with remote/doesn't work as advertised, change/reformat your SD card..no clue why but I almost took my remote back when first purchased as just flakey but a reformat of SD card and has worked perfectly ever since.

Remote doesn't have SD card....thats why its weird reformatting the GoPro SD card fixes the glitch....if you search you will see lots of people get the remote glitch and reformatting fixes issue.

Just an update.
I finished off my camera mount. It is a carbon tube that came from a SUP paddle, attached to the boom with cable ties along with the remaining outhaul rope to avoid any shake. I had to cut the tub so it goes around the boom. I have left it longer as I might need that extra length for the Ezzy hydra sail.
I have a piece of rope going through the tube securing the GoPro to the boom as well as a float on the gopro.
I also ran the same test with an inst360 x1.
So I prefer the GoPro because of the following reasons
* It has just under 2hours of recording time. I don't feel rushed to get out and record myself (might be because I am getting older) the insta is 40 mins.
* I can see that it is recording (LCD screen is visible)
* It has all the viewing angles that I need to examine my windsurfing

I find that the insta360 x 1 dive case is exceptionally well designed, it's chunky and I doubt that water is going to get in. But I can't see the little round LCD screen. I had to take it out of the case set it to record and even then it did not record any footage. So I am going to stick with the gopro. From time to time I will try the insta again as it could all be that I am just inexperienced in using it.

There was a mount a while called Clewmount that was made for the clew angle & gopro cameras. I just did a search but can't find it yet. Someone might know about it.
