I was there watching and I heard the briefing for the Breakwater to Beacon
It sounded pretty clear that there was a boat with a flag to aim for and there would be a buoy there to turn around!
Whats the deal how can you just go to some random buoy ( no boat in sight ) turn around and come back only completing half the course and win.
Dose it matter were the boat is ( or were it was supposed to be ) everyone one was given the same instructions to go out to the boat, no?
The bit i liked best was the way they made it sound like the people who did the correct course ( none shq sailers ) did the wrong course.

Who Cares!!!! The race is all about having fun!!!
Clearly there was confusion but I don't think it was anyones fault. Obviously everyone thought they were doing the correct course. I think it was great that the confusion was acknowledged by awarding two sets of results one for each course - rather than just pissing off half the competitors by disqualifying them. I distinctly heard at the briefing to sail around the boat then it was changed to sail around the buoy but it was all pretty casual so it would have been easy for anyone to misinterpret what the actual course was - clearly some people heard boat and others heard buoy - both were said so the confusion is understandable!
If people criticise the organisers of events like this then there'll be no events. I think most people had a good time as is the spirit of the race and SHQ along with Naish and the other sponsors should be thanked for their hard work, initiative and generosity in putting together an event with a great atmosphere and generous prizes.
Well done SHQ and congratulations Joel and Luke you were both clearly the fastest on the water so I think it was the right result in the end anyway.
