I have a JP freestyle wave 84 and a few RRD freestyle waves. Personally I think the RRD's are much better. I find the JP a very hard ride and am thinking of swapping for the 85 RRD.

I dont own either but have got a mate who has tried both in the 100lt range. His opinion was that the RRD was very comfortable and carvy whilst the jp is a bit faster but still carves awesome. So it depends on what is your priority when buying a board. If you have access to demo the boards then i would try both.
I own a fanatic freewave 86 2008 and it is fast, stable and carves like its on rails in other words very nice.

+1 on the RRD's. I have two of them and they are alround awesome. I have never ridden the JP FSW but the RRD's always rate higher in the magazine tests (well, since the 06 models).
Testers say the JP is a little more freeridey and the RRD a bit better in waves.... but by no means slow.

guys thanks for the input i have tested the RRD 101 and found it a good board but alas REG at windsurfing perth does let people demo JP boards , so going on your responses it will probably be the RRD when the new stocks arrive.

had a JP FSW 91 circa 2004, now have an RRD FSW 85. Like the RRD better. Super easy, comfy, fast, forgiving.

Great topic, I've just got approval to get a new board and have been eyeing off one of the RRD FSW's.

I'm 78Kg and fairly competent in straps, jumping, get about 50% of my gybes, getting better at waterstarting, so was thinking of moving down from my old carve 123 to a RRD FSW 95 or 100.

Question I have is with the wider style boards are they floatier than the old ones? Would I still be able to uphaul on one of these?

101 Kg will just float if it displaces 100 litres, what's-his-Greek-name's theorem.

So your weight + weight of board and rig will probably equal around 100Kg. I've got a 98litre FSW (not to be confused with FWS) and weigh around 80. I can uphaul on it in flat water, but find it a bit tricky or even impossible in ocean or heavy chop. In flat water soles of my feet are just underwater but it's still pretty easy to balance.

Adam, I'm 80kg . Had a quick go on a friends RRD FSW100 last weekend and it felt great. I reckon the evl one is spot on, you could uphaul on the flat but tough with chop.

guys i really should read what i type, i tested rode the RRD freestyle wave board and found it a good comfortable board and have ordered one,but what i was trying in my earlier blog was to say that Reg was not agreeable to a test ride on the JP freestyle board so it made my decision easier with the help of your feedback as well

You made the right move in my opinion.
Last season I swapped a 2005 102 JP FSW for a 2005 90l RRD FSW.
I find that I get the same early planing as the bigger JP, plus better gybing, jumping and carving performance (this give more confidence to pull off moves). Plus, being a smaller board it works in higher wind conditions so I can enjoy it more before swapping down a board size.
I weigh 94kg.
