Has anyone scored rotto for wave sailing, surely the north side of the island would be consistent with cross off shore and pumping in winter and radar reef would be pretty epic a couple of times a year on a northerly, surfed it heaps but never seen anyone windsurfing it

Sharks rasor sharp reef & unforgiven tides. I think slalom the go there very rarely seen wave sailors there..to much happening on the mainland .mark might fill you in on the best spots if you desire Goodluck!

Hey mark is it more a case of to hard to get there and set up or there's easier just as good places to go on the mainland ,I know it can be fickle if your not used to the place but surley radars, the reefs on the north west side ,chickens,Starks is nearly always 20knots cross off(to short?) Transit cross off westerly, could you rig in a bay and base offshore on a boat or even rig on a boat,I don't get why its not a popular destination for kiters and windsurfers

I was watching a windsurfer at Transits last Thursday when the wind was up from the Rotto Pub.
He rigged from a runabout he had anchored just off the side of the bank.
Unfortunately there was no swell but the line or angle of attack he was sailing in the SSW'er looked very promising.
In a fresh breeze transit really starts working on a 4m swell. Possibly 3m but definately has potential.
Maybe a Charter over there next time the wind and swell aligns is on the cards.
I'm sure we could fit half a dozen guys and gear on a charter boat and moore it off the bank.
Beers at the hotel after the sail and a ride back to freo after sunset.
I've just talked myself into it.

Trip back is a ROUGH and WET if the breeze is still cranking. Done late runs when fishing and it is not fun even when following ferry and it was not sailing strength

I've done my time at rotto surfing and coming home in bad weather you definitely have to want it,I'm a long way from where I need to be for such missions but gotta have goals that's why I took up sailing if I put enough work in I'd like to go there next winter even if I'm not ready still be good to take my boat and get footage of who evers keen, even if you stay over and come home in the morn.
