I think I recall you having once made a Nullarbor crossing doco Mathew? Short, entertaining and to the point?

Great Vid. Gave me a lump in my throat. I used to do the journey regularly. Best time we ever did was 46 hrs Melbourne to Bunbury (2 drivers) trying to get home for Christmas. My truck wasn't as flash as theirs! I am going cross it one day as a tourist so I can really appreciate it.

Done it 77 times now, 53 of those by bike. 1st time the dirt started at Balladonia, then bitumen from the fruit fly stop at Ceduna to the railway line the other side of Ceduna, then dirt until Kimba. Of course Madura Pass, Eucla Pass and Penong's main drag (about 800m) had bitumen of sorts on them. As for non-stop, I've done 10 of those and all on my own and 6 of them by bike. Best I ever did was 47hrs from Attadale to Penrith, but a typical non-stopper was around 48.5hrs, most of them from Attadale to Richmond RAAF base or vica versa. Mrs Piranha and I went for our honeymoon on the bike, from Sth Perth to the Snowy Mtns where we camped by the Tumut River for a month, just upstream from Sioux City. We did Adelaide to Perth (coming home) in 23hrs with just me riding.

After they bitumenised it all it became just plain boring.

How nice is it up at Sioux City?

Used to camp there all the time. Dingoes yapping on top of the hills at night. Great place.

Well, I know it used to be fabulous camping there. I camped at or near Sioux City probably 60 or 70 times - during the '70s when I was based at Wagga. Mrs Piranha and I have been married 30 yrs this year, so it's anybody's guess what it's like now. Dingoes were howling about the mountains every night during the honeymoon. We had a wonderful time. However, not much seems to left intact these days, so it's probably been turned into a tourist resort by now.
