it's generally best to have a boom fit the sail with as little extention as possible. that way you get the least flex (check out the boom-mounted go-pro videos to see flex in action).

so extending past what the boom is built for you'll introduce more flex, and possibly even bring on the early demise of your boom. wouldn't recommend it.

options in order of preference:

(1) longer boom
(2) longer extensions for your boom (if it is old you may get a complete longer tail with the right diameter at any one of a number of windsurfing shops for very little outlay)
(3) drill another hole in your extension bits about 4cm further up. This is NOT good and increases the chance of breakages but if you do not sail overpowered, and are not heavy and won't pump hard, and be sensible it may be an option for a short while until you can afford option 1.

I have a sail that requires a 238 boom but my boom only extends to 235. Has anyone ever changed the position of the hole i the sail or is it always necessary to have the right boom?

I did a clew cutout mod on one of my older sails. It actually worked well and allowed me to use my existing boom.

waiting4wind mentioned about $55 in his post. I folloed his link though and the comment by the Maui guy, which is another link in one of the later posts, is putting me off going down that path. There is also an Italien guy making some comments re clew cutouts that make sense to me. Anyways. 2nd hand boom it is. Does anyone know of one for sail. pass it forward
