unfortunately better suited to reduced diameter mast (rdm) with correct measurement downhaul on either enigma or gorilla severne mast, as most brands are now making brand specific sails suited to their own mast bend characteristics!

what age Severne, what model, and what mast?

I doubt it is battens - more likely bend curve mismatch, SDM/RDM issue, or a 1990 mast / 2013 sail kinda deal.

What do you mean? Are they too long so they stick out of the batten pockets or do they seem too long because they stick around the mast and you can't rotate them? Is it a wave sail or a race sail? Are there cams?

I agree with Zack/Mark/sailhack but also a bit more outhaul could help.

A batten is only too long if you can't stuff all of it into the sail.
They need to go the full distance of the batten pocket or they aren't doing any good.

No cams, old 1peice standard mast feels very rigid when down hauled, the curve in the sail is huge and the battens won't go side to side around the mast when you pop it because there's to much pressure on them.think it is 07.

If it is a one piece mast it will not work in any sail after about a 1987 - 1990 model.
There's ya problem.

One time I disagree Mark, you may be correct with 90% of masts, But there's a few of us still using our mid 1990s one piece Killwell matrix 5s, 70% carbon constant curve. None of the 30% glass goes up the mast, that's the carbon's job, the glass only goes around. They're slightly reduced diameter (the old windsurfer, tyransea standard), tough as nails and last for ever. All my modern sails designed to rig on constant curve masts set very well on them.
You can recognise me coming by the masts on the roof.

Yes many people are, OK I generalised alot....

Bu if he can't downhaul it all the way and battens are WAY off the mast, I think the mast is the culprit, surely...

Your Kilwell is pretty modern anyway, I was thinking it is more likely a glass Rotho or something

No you don't need an RDM necessarily.
A 5 y/o 30% carbon SDM will often be stronger than the more expensive 100% carbon mast and strong enough for an intermediate windsurfer. Don't be fooled into thinking you need an RDM or a 75 - 100% mast.

What is the sail? A $100 SDM may be the best investment you make, and a $500 RDM a waste of money. MAYbe.

The important thing is to get a mast with the same bend curve as the sail. Preferably the same brand.

I think I mentioned Rotho masts.
Bloody good cut into 3ft lengths for beach rod holders
