Hi Windsurfers,
I'll be on a business trip in Sydney in mid September and will extend it by a one-week-holiday. I'm really excited about the journey and I know that one week is really nothing for a large country like Australia, but that's all I could get.
Because of the short time I guess I'd rather stay in the area around Sydney. Where can I go for windsurfing there? Provided there's wind at that time, of course.
I've been windsurfing for about seven years, can do waterstarts and harness/ footstraps and presently try to manage the perfect power jibe. Wave experience is limited, though.
I would have to rent all equipment, therefore I'd also need a surf-rental around.
Who can send in some spot suggestions and maybe also contacts for rental and affordable accomodation?
Thank you very much.
Best wishes,
Sabine

September? if you are lucky there might be some North Easters starting to appear. They will be very light however.

Your best bet would be Gerroa for the North Easters at that time of the year. Waves are usually small so no worries there.

Other than that you will see Westerlies or Southerlies if you stay in Sydney. In Sydney for the type of sailing you are after I'd recommend Botany Bay. It's mainly bump and jump style sailing. For a spot guide go here: nswwavesailing.org/spot-guide/

Regarding gear rental try Windsurf and Snow (www.windsurfnsnow.com.au/ ) they should be able to rent you some gear. I'd probably bring a wetsuit and harness as well as harness lines. Best you contact WSS. Sam or Chris will be able to help you out. If you get unstuck try this forum again... there might be other options.

If you've got a week in Sydney in September I'd probably be inclined not to both with windsurfing and enjoy Sydney instead... the surfing is awesome, the city is great but windsurfing in Sept will be a bit average.

If you are fully in to windsurfing then you might want to jump on an internal flight somewhere that others are better placed to advise on - will it still be windy in NE Queensland?

Hope that doesn't sound too negative, thought it worth mentioning now rather than you discovering average winds when you get here! Please don't be too pissed of with me if its a freak week of 30kt winds!

As the aboveposter said, this is the time of the year when nature tries to shift between 'winter' winds and summer breezes. NEs are unlikely and won't be great this early.
For westerlies, look at the spots in B-bay where winds will be clean - Kurnell comes to mind.

You're doing well not to get about too much - 1 week not worth it.
When there is no wind, you may want to spend a day or so at the Blue Mountains and its bushwalks - the Heads, West Head for nice morning pictures, some of the walks at Ku-ring-gai Chase, etc. That kinda stuff.
