Hi guys, I'm just wondering about the prospect of windsurfing in winter in Melbourne. I hope it's not so much of a dumb question. Do you think those top 20C days might be enough to get over the coldness of the water.

Cheers

I used to surf all through winter down at Tourquay (I think thats how you spell it) when i lived there. Very cold, but really only a prob for the big hold downs.
Windsurfing should be a snap.

One idea that might help - well it helps me... I keep some "hot packs" in the car - when I feel my strength level dropping due to the cold, I activate a hot pack and place it in my wetsuit. I have a muesli bar, and within a few minutes my energy levels come back up and I no longer feel the cold for another 45mins.

you know it's cold when it's warmer in the water than on top of it. With wind chill, that happens a bit down in Tassie during winter, probably the same in Melbourne. Get the best wettie you can (or even can't)afford, and go for it.

It may look stupid and I dont even know if you can buy them anymore, however I have definitely proven this theory correct. Last year while sailing in "bloody cold" Bunbury I would go out in a sealed-seam full wetsuit. Still feeling the cold I pulled out the old wetsuit hood and before I knew it, I would be breaking into a sweat out in the rain and hail. When I go to hot, I just pulled the hood down and around my neck. As they say...most of the heat you lose is through your noggin! What ever it takes to give you more time on the water.

Happy sailing

yep hoods are definately worth it - they may look stupid, but who's going to be out watching you when it's brass monkey weather. even the old gath keeps your head, and hence you, noticably warmer.

Guil, those top 20 degree days are about to end, so the water, and air, is only going to get colder until October. But with lots of rubber, there should be plenty of big days over winter to enjoy. Just don't buy a 5mm dive hood. It cooks your brain.

wear an extra wetsuit jacket over the top of wetsuit, makes a big difference to core temperature.
