If you want to sleep in the van without being in a park - either private camping or national park - stay away from the "backpacker areas"
Places like Byron, Noosa, Cairns etc wont tolerate overnight parking in many places.
Keep your eye out for national parks, there are camping areas in them that you can stay at for very little to in some cases nothing. http://australia.gov.au/about-australia/australian-story/national-parks
^^ This. Go party in Byron for a week, pay to stay at a backpackers in town, then go stay the rest of the time at some other place on the 10000km of beautiful coastline you can choose from and sleep there in the van for free, or pay $4 p/n in a camp site. I recommend Yamba and south, Wooli, Beaches down to Coffs if you wanna be in that part of the world.
Someone tell me why I haven't bought up 10 acres near Byron and opened it to vans at night, $10 per night to pull up a spot, 20 vans per night and you'd be raking it in, pay off the land in no time..
