I will be coming to Tasmania for a week in the last week in January. I am heading to the west coast with friends if swell looks good to get some surf. Is it worth bringing over my windsurfing gear - will there be anyone around for that week as not sure that I want to sail alone in the wilds of Tassie?
don't know that you will come across alot of windsurfers down the western part of Tas maybe up Marrawah way and Stanley most of us sail Port Sorell, Stanley and Hobart.it would be worth taking gear on a SW wind with a very nice swell at Marrawah, but depends on what you want to do.
Hi - Thanks for the replies. I think it is Marrawah I am going to so I may bring some kit. What size of board and sails would you recommend for Tassie? I have a 66Ll and 69Ll - is it super windy enough to get away with the smaller board? I am about 65 kilos I think. Also would a 4.7 and 4.2 be the sail size of choice?
Hi Catie, at that time of year you will get either a seabreeze 12-25 knts, most likely 15-20), or if there's a westerly system coming through (fairly rare in Jan but not unknown) it could be blowing to buggery. Probably similar to NZ conditions. Good steaks at the Marrawah pub.
hate to disagree but ive found the seabreezes to be a lot stronger than that. if the weather is warm enough they can often reach 30 knots. i'm in marrawah at the moment and have basically only been using my 4.7 with either a 68l or 63l board. you are a similar weight to me so i would recommend your small board and those sail sizes should be perfect.
Thanks so much for the replies - Al will you still be around end of January? I will check forecast week before and make a decision but looking like I will try and bring a board and a 4.7 and 4.2. Hopefully catch a few of you while there!
Hi Caitie, guess I will be still here at the same time. Bring some more good conditions with you!!! Today it was quite good sailing at Green Point Beach..Bluff Beach also worked well...so maybe we can share some quality wind and waves.. Claus
