Hi, I do think that windskate is really good to windsurf better. You could watch this video to do the right thing to start. Then, step by step with practice you will get better for sure. It is so mutch easier than in the water, that you could practice a lot without swimming for nothing. Be sure to learn how to brake with the sail to start! Have fun.

I have used pool noodle to protect boom ends. Used the noodle with centre hole n slit it. Cabletie into place. Cut another piece to fit behind boom bra for boomhead.

If I were to sail inland, I would only do this sport (with a mountain board though).
Super cheap, can ride close to home, never get skunked (works in zero knots just like a bicycle!).
Extremely safe (low speeds, hop off), works over grass, dirt, asphalt.
Beginner super friendly, anyone can just stand on the board!
No getting getting wet, works below freezing.
First duck jibes, backwind sailing.
I mean I can go on and on.

What size board is best to get started on? Normal skate trucks & wheels or go for bigger diameter?

Heres my latest version. 10"/180mm trucks. RKP trucks will turn better,with less 'wheelbite' on deck. Wheels 60mm n up.
This was a solid ply Wakeskate 42"x14". I bolted the trucks on where they looked right. Bolted mastbase on where old fin was. Works a treat. Will eventually shape the outline a bit more windsurf.

Yea but, yea but, don't they struggle on anything but decent pavement?

Not with an all terrain board (atb), aka mountain board. They have big wheels with pneumatic tires.
