Wider fins instead of longer?

To carry a larger sail, you need a larger fin. But if you don't use a wider board, then eventually you start to rail up, right?

To avoid needing a wider board, can I just get a wider fin rather than a longer one? Still get an increase in surface area, but not the increased leverage of the longer fin to lift the board's rail.

Does this make sense? What are the pros/cons of doing this?

Makes a lot of sense to me, think I've even seen the sort of thing you're thinking of. There might be a drop off in performance, A high aspect fin can be thin, but a low aspect needs to be thick to get the same foil ratio. But unless you're racing probably not important.
