Hi, if my sail says it needs a 205 boom am I better off buying a 165-215 boom or a 185-235 boom.
I guess the longer boom will be heavier but would have less extension hanging out.

It depends on your sails, current and prospective. The 215 will work OK on a 205 sail.

Like Notwal said, what your other sails are/are going to be will determine which size is best.
