Hey there,

I'm planning a trip to Australia next year july to october. I was wondering if anyone can tell me which coast (east, west, south) has the highest chance of wind in those months. I prefer the west coast but I already heart that the wind is crap during those months. Is that right??

September and October can be good on the west coast but storm fronts only in July and August.

South coast is the place for wind in winter, but it's cold.
Victoria seems to have been getting some good wind.

What about far north Queensland? Great weather and trade winds.

OOh yes. How could I forget? But take your own gear.
A much better option. And plenty to see and do besides windsurf too.

Hey Rhapsodie it would help to know what sort of sailing you want?

Late Sept and October would mean Gnaraloo (north west WA) is the best place in Oz, period. But it is hardcore wavesailing. If you wnat BumpnJump and don't mind the cold, Victoria would be hard to beat in July / Aug

Hey thanks for all the replies.

Well I spent 3 months on Gran Canaria and thats where I learnt windsurfing (up to 20 knots) every day surfing;-). I think I wouldnt be able to surf 3m or higher waves though...
Beach start, water start are not a problem, but I guess waves would knock me out ;-)
I would be bringing my own gear.
I think north queensland would probably the warmest place to go in August..,but what about boxjelly fish?

Is there a place in Victoria where the waves are not as big??Probably not...haha.
Maybe I just have to beat the waves.

North Queensland is definitely the warmest in August, and winter is the "Low" season for jellyfish. Wear a full length wetsuit or a stinger suit to be sure.
Even less risk if you're out on the islands on the barrier reef - and you can snorkel when it's not blowing.

I only ever wear boardies up here (Cairns) except stinger seaon from November then it's a stinger suit
Wind is hit and miss, August is normally good but August this year is poop
Green Island is normally very good but again been poop this year, go figure
The good news is it's warm and heaps to do, no wind = great diving etc

What about getting in a tinnie and heading over to Thursday Island or keep going to PNG? Thursday Island looks like a freaking awesome place for windsurfing and you don't need a passport.

Anyway I'd rather spend July/August in FNQ than in bright and sunny Victoria.

That's because I wasn't there without my gear this year.
Last year when I was at Green Island without my gear it blew 30 - 40kts day and night for the whole time I was there!

Well, I had a look at some pics of green Island- looks beautiful. Is it possible to take windsurfing gear on those catamarans?

I will probably start my trip in Cairns going down the coast maybe to Melbourne or depending on the time, to Adelaide and catch a plane from there to Perth, will see if I take the gear all the way to Perth.

For now Im just waiting for a trip to Sylt, Germany in october

well I had 3 sails in three weeks when I got back, which was more than I had in coffs for six months, but yep your right its coming into your season now and it doesnt really kick in here solid until next feb/march, so it looks like I missed a season somewhere. But even this time off year Bowen usually has a good blow every 2 weeks and in FNG (firiebob's territory) it should be pumping consistantly.
I hope your kicking it off the creek mouth Deano. Watch that nose ( on the board that is)

Green Island is beautiful and great snorkelling too.
You can take your gear on the ferry and you need to because if it's windy the resort won't let you use their gear even if you are a guest. Grrrr!
Beware though, the prevailing wind is offshore and may be 30 - 40 knots.

Some of the best sailing I have had was in the Exmouth region (That's North WA Rhapsodie) in August / Sept when i spent 6 months in WA a few years ago. The SW breezes start real early in the season up there. Some good surfing (ie: Aussie surfing, is not windsurfing - surfing is with a board catching waves only - no sail ;-) ) as well, for when the wind is offshore in the morning. Around exmouth it is pretty rugged, but you can sail on the west side of the peninsula at some of the beach breaks, and I am also told that the easternside of the peninsula is excellent flatwater/speed sailing. I saw a couple of guys out with flat water speed gear when i was driving through exmouth, but spent all of my time on the west side. Send me a message if you want some tips on where to sail when you are there. Have a great trip....enjoy our country
