Guys,

There is a small group of us, who occasionally make the trip up to the Central Coast, from Sydney.

We're looking for ideas on places to go. We have been to Canton beach (in the Toukley area) a few times.

Would any of the locals have any ideas on similar (or better) locations in that vicinity?

TIA

There are a few good options around. Try Toowoon Bay just south of the Entrance, its easy to sail, perfect side shore in a southerly, it has nice flat water in the bay which you can gain heaps of speed for a jump on the point, can get good for waveriding and is the option when everything else is out of control and always has a bunch of sailors and kiters out.
Soldiers Beach at Norah Head is good in Nor East and South West, be mindful of surfers.
Birdie Beach in the Munmorah State Recreaction Park at Lake Munmorah is always a bit windier than Soldiers in a Nor East, a very good spot that attracts swell when there is nothing anywhere else(especially on low tide).
There is also plenty of lake options on Lake Munmorah and Mannering Park on the southern part of Lake Macquarie....Sorry for the small novel here but it would be good to see more sailors around these areas...it can be fricking boring sailing by yourself!!

Canton Beach at Toukley is a very good place to sail for anything from SE to west, although westerlys are very patchy.
In a Noreaster head out to Soldiers Beach at Norah Head nice cross shore point break or just blast out in the bay.Or go down to North Entrance rig and sail out from near the fish Co-op
I learnt to sail at Toukley and love the place
Just don't forget your weedy

I grew up and learnt sailing on the Central Coast, before making the move to WA.

I thought Tuggerah Lake, eg Canton Beach, The Entrance, was full of sea lice for 7 months of the year and one of the most contaminated lakes in NSW ??

However, some of the wavesailing spots on the Coast could give some of the more popular WA spots a run for their money, especially the Norah Head area. Norah offers some much variety and possibilties for all wind and wave conditions. If it wasn't for the consistency of wind here in WA I would have stayed sailing back at Norah, and a couple of other spots.

As with Birdie Beach, which is a great alternative, I remember that you had to pay something like $8 for a day pass during the weekend and school holidays to get in there ?? This was about 5 years ago so things could have changed by now.

peto, sailing uncrowded places on the Coast is dam good. I did it for many years and rate those sails as the most memorable I've had.

Yeah sheeny it is good having uncrowded spots. but once and a while it is nice to sail with at least one other person...your right about norah, the point can go off with east-south swell an NE wind, with birdie it costs about $7 for entry per visit but if you buy an annual $20 pass you can come and go as many times for $20 in 12months...definately worth it...also there is the great non wind activity of nude sunbaking at the northen end of birdie for the unclad lovers(be aware of a few freaks in the carpark)

Hey noddy i have to agree with sheeny, that tuggerah lake is a seedy shallow crap lake. Try Lake Munmorah or the better option of lake macquarie...and even further north along the pacific hwy around swansea you will find some beautiful sandy turquoise water to sail in...if ya keen i will meet ya some were one weekend.
