Hey guys

I'm new to Melbourne, moved here from Perth so I can probably help more with where to wave sail in Perth than here in Melbourne. I will say however that in Melbourne, Point Danger is probably the best on offer for learning to wave sail. Unfortunately, living in Melbourne, you dont have much option but to travel a fair bit for wave sailing, even if you are in Mornington. Flinders is probably not too far away though and as long as the swell is not too big apparently it's not bad. You can pretty much guarantee, wherever you can surf along the coast, you can wavesail. Obviously subject to wind direction and how comfortable you are with waterstarts, jibes etc.... I guess the best advice I could give for starting out in waves is no matter where you live, go to the places where there are the longest rides even when the waves are small. To give an example, I learnt to wave sail at Gnaraloo when the swell was around 2 ft and learnt more in one session than sailing months at Scarborough with similar size close out waves. Good wave sailing really relies on wind that is slightly offshore rather than onshore so you stay powered up while going along the face.

Unfortunately the beaches around perth are normally very onshore so you have to get out of town, either to Lancelin, Geraldton, Mandurah is not bad. If I was going out for a sail in Perth after work, I would always head to Medams which is north of Trigg however there is lots of reef sticking out of the water and lots of people damage gear if they go in the wrong area. Cottesloe is ok also however it' more bump and jump. Dont even bother to learn to wave sail at Scarborough. The waves close out the majority of the time, the current is real strong, and you will get frustrated. I love sailing there now but i've been wave sailing for a fair while.

Back to Melbourne. I go sailing in the bay a fair bit around Brighton. Supprisingly the waves for jumping on a strong wind are pretty good. I sailed today (about 35 knots with a 4.5 sail). You can have some good fun with big huge jumps when it's strong wind if that's what you are into.

Hope this helps.
