This article gives pretty good coverage of how to set up your wave board for different conditions. It's certainly helped me; I thought my board was a dog but I just didn't have it set up properly!

Takehome version (with piccies - 0.5MB) -www.jemhall.com/PDF/features/Tuning_a_Wave_Board.pdf

Web version (might load quicker)

It covers fin position, fin size, footstrap position, footstrap size, footstrap spread and mastfoot position.

Good link Leech, thanks. I've always been a bit of put the mastfoot in the middle move it forward or back by 2 cms. Now I'm going to measure and mark... It also shows I have my straps to close together and probably too far back - I often bounce out or loose speed which are both problems associated with everything being too far back (apart from fin).

I went out wavesailing on the weekend in cross shore conditions with my RRD Free-style wave. I had a nightmare for 2 hours as everytime I went for a bottom turn I would spin out a slid in front of the wave. Reading the Windsurf mag report on the board it says that the board does this if you use your front foot, however it's awesome for back foot steering. I guess Jem's article works for most boards but not my RRD as whatever I do it'll always spin out/tramline on the bottom turn...

would a fin with more rake achieve the same thing? Cos from memory the factory fin for the RRDFSW is pretty straight...

The original fin is pretty upright with a last a raked back tip. I actualy stick a wave fin it that i used to use on a mistral score. It's one of the older red to yellow fade JP wave fins. I have heard mixed reports about them, so maybe that doesn't help!

Crash, a MFC fin will compliment your RRD - check out the one that comes with the WaveCult, that should do it. In regards to the JP fin, it's a dog & should only be used to ward off errant kiters (either at the beach or in social situations).

It's the MFC FPT. I use one of these with my waveboard and can vouch for the awesomeness . Love it.

Hmmm I have a MFC fin and I think it's a dog of a fin! Either it's a rubbish MFC or it just doesn't work with my Naish. My favourite fin is the stock standard Naish fin that came with the board.

The other nice fin I have is the one that i won on this forum. Can't remember who makes it though.... I'll see if I can get hold of an MFC to demo in the RRD.

Thanks for the advice!

BTW when you say a JP fin is **** - what do you mean?

Most wave boards come with a standard fin box, which means there is usually about 100mm of empty fin box,not taken up by the fin,I am convinced after many trials, that the air that is held in the empty fin box cavity while sailing , DOES travel down the fin box,and causes cavitation, good old side ways. What i do to fix this problem is first i get a piece of rag and some TURPS, clean out the fin box(silicon sticks better),i find personally i place my fin in about the middle of box so there is about 50-70mm of whole at front and back of the fin.I then find some WHITE POLYSYRENE(plenty of it around) cut it out with a stanley knife so it fits nice and snug in box(You may have to give it a couple of goes to get it perfect)but you must leave a whole 8-10mm from the board surface, which i then pump fill with clear or white turps based silicon,i then get a piece of paper or hard plastic sheet and hold vertical to the board and start at the fin and work towards the nose and then the tail.leaves a lovely smooth silicon finish which is level with the board bottom(do not touch it but clean up any mess on the board, you can re-do if u f/up)then leave it over night for it to dry.)i once did this with a brand new board and sailed straight afterwards and was still ok.(i have seen guys just fill the whole cavity with silicon and smooth off with their finger, not as good, and is hard to remove if you require later on.I find i can also remove or change fins easily.and the polystyrene maaaay even add some bouyancy, all helps.Try it,it is very cheap to do,and i am convinced it makes a difference.

Yeh it works sweet on the wave. Board is super loose. Used it again today at scarbs, ballistic winds. juice + MFC are good. Dunno what it would be like with a bigger fin, will have to give it ago sometime, might be easier to get out.

Hey this was good. Went out today and moved mast track forward, fin way back. Made a huge difference.

Also had a new, bigger fin. Think this helped. Planed early, went up wind nicely and didn't slide out once for the whole day. For a wave board compared to my brothers freeride board i thought it was great. Only disadvantage is i cant have outboard straps (two at the back). Good for trying chop hops though.
