I've only recently got gear that is good enought to hit the waves. Does anyone know of a decent spot to try for a first time down the gold coast or up the sunny coast? If some on could point out a place or two that would be sweet!
not so close to home for you but if you want to improve your wave riding I'd suggest you plan 2 weeks in Geraldton during the summer. Both Point Moore and Corronation Beach are great places to learn wave riding and jumping.
The beauty with both places is that there is about 500 meters of flat water before you hit the waves. So no matter how big it get's there is always a way to get out of the way of the really big rollers.
To point where I have been there with people learning to windsurf on the inside while logo high waves rolled in only a few hundred meters away.
Not related to the Gold Coast, I know, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.
If you want to drive down to the southern end of the gold coast, North Kirra in a northerly is quite good -- very sedate, good introduction, not much shorebreak (usually), still some lumps out the back to have fun on.
Cheers for the heads up on some loactions. stehsegler sounds like I know where my next vacation is. Nebbian and Gestalt there is a good chance you will see a dud out in the waves at mooloolaba or Kirra the next time the wind is over 15 knots and in the right direction.
get warmed up on the flat water inside the bar , then head out to the waves. Popular spot. There are more windsurfing shops in caloundra than Brisbane.

On the Sunshine Coast - Neil St park at Caloundra (Dicky Beach) is great in a SE wind. Usually not to hard to get out & there is a reef about 300 metres from shore offering good waves & swell. The Caloundra bar can get very messy & watch the shallows and strong run out tide. Mooloolaba is great in Northerlies and for a slalom ride up the coast to Maroochydore (& fantastic downwind return)you can't beat it.
