Locals probably know this. I was kayaking recently & had forgotten my booties so had to step out into seagrass on the N side of Coal point.I said I hope I dont step on any nasties..5mins later as we were preparing to get going there was a blue ringed octopus in 5" of water near the shore.I havent seen one of those for 40 years! Cute but deadly! We picked it up with the paddle & threw it out into deeper water. Ill be wearing booties from now on..
So watch out if your barefoot!
Cripes between sharks & blue ringed Octopuses I think Ill give up windsurfing & take up knitting!

Definitely very dangerous. They banned it on airlines.
And they would know because they're experts on all things safety related.

And you always hear hospital staff talking about needle stick injuries.

They are very timid creatures. You normally can't get within 15 metres of them. Sounds like it was sick or dieing for you to be able to touch it with your paddle.

And to add to the nasties, watch out for razor fish. I have sliced my foot to the bone twice now within 12 months. I see them mainly from Wangi down to sunshine areas, but it will only be a matter of time before they start showing up at coal point and valentine etc.

Unfortunately with these, booties won't save you either :(

Forget extreme ironing..I LOATHE ironing [}:)]
Re razor fish.. yep Ive thought of that-it would be nasty..yet I still jump off especially now I have a longer fin to protect from the bottom. Were you jumping off or just walking in?
I stood on a Bullrat..( ?) years ago..little bottom dwelling fish with nasty pines..god it hurt! Usually if you hurt yourself the adrenaline of sailing makes you not notice it till later but this was BAD..
Cripes if you thought about it youd stay in bed wouldnt you?

Blue ringed occie is about the scariest thing I can think of in the world.

You won't see it

You probably won't feel the bite

The muscle paralysis is total but as your heart and breathing stop, and you sink to the bottom, you'd be aware what is happening.

Many years ago there was a guy who was bitten, and as his mates drove him 1hr to hospital, doing CPR all the way, he could hear a person saying "give up he's dead"
I'll bet he doesn't talk to that 'mate' anymore but thinks the other 2 or 3 are just tops

Saw five of them whilst scuba diving under Portsea Pier yesterday... Just little, but unmistakably blue-ringed octopus. Didn't seem to want to come out and play unfortately - spent their time hiding under rocks. Looking forward to doing a night dive and seeing them in action.
