Hi, I'm really wanting to get into windsurfing, however I really don't have a clue about the kind of gear I should buy and how much it would cost.

I think I might get a few lessons, just to learn the basics etc, so if anyone knows of a place that runs classes in Perth, that would be great.

So really just wondering what is the best way to begin windsurfing and the possible cost involved as well as the equipment I should look at buying

Thanks

buy very cheap/old, even throwaway gear to start with.

learn on wide board / small sail combo is easiest.

a 5.0m sail is ideal, with a 70cm wide or 130litre volume board.

plastic boards to learn on or it can get expensive.

a 30 percent carbon mast should take the knocks ok.

whole setup 2nd hand, less than $400, if u know what and where to look for.

Call Windforce. They run a windsurfing school and hire at Pelican Point.

Good advice Greenroom.

It's fastest to learn on purpose built learning gear - about a metre wide with a small rig. It's only about $20 per hour I think. It takes the whole balance thing out of the equation and lets you focus on technique. After you have the basics you can look to buy some gear and you'll have a better idea of what you need. The guys down at Peli Point are all really helpful - don't be afraid to ask for help.

Do it - you won't regret it - the first time you get fully planing with you feet in the straps they'll be able to see your smile from space.

Agree with going to a school...

... do not agree with buying old throwaway gear.

Newer kit will make sailing so much easier and you'll learn much faster.

Lessons first though, then get some advice from other windsurfers and the shops.

A $350 3 year old sail, $150 used mast and a half-decent boom will be mcuh better than $50 worth of 12 year old rig from Ebay. If you can afford new, all the better.

Trust me on this... I learnt the hard way when I was a skint student.
