I'm looking at buying myself a Toyota Coaster, fitting it out with bed, toilet, kitchen etc and heading over to WA for the summer. Before I commit myself, I'd like a little advice from some of you West Australians about parking areas and beaches north from Perth to about Exmouth. I am only a flat water and BJ sailor with aspirations to small wave sailing.

What I want to know is, are there are lots of legal spots to camp in a large vehicle where I can also rig and go out for a session? Obviously, it's a little impractical to travel in a mobile flat if I'd still need a second vehicle to actually go out for a sail. Should I can the idea and just rent a flat or motel rooms and drive to the local beaches daily?

Any advice? E-mail address [email protected]

Most wave spots are close enough to a town that the Rangers will give you a ticket if you camp there. The exceptions are Gnaraloo which will be a bit full on for you by the sound of it, and Coronation Beach nr Geraldton which will be perfect for you.

If you don't want to pay for a caravan park and want B&J with easy waves Coronation is IT I think $5 a night, but you have no amenities at all so you need to take water, food, everything. But 20kn plus, cross shore, 4 days a week, 500m flat water and then small waves out the back getting bigger the further you go out. Perfect intro to waves. It is about 25km north of Geraldton which is a major town.

If you don't mind paying $20 a night for a caravan park us WA guys will be able to suggest many more places eg Lancelin and some Perth spots for good into to waves. Coronation is the pick for conditions AND price though.

Mr Milk, I hope you don't mind if I tack my question on to yours. Can anyone give directions to bush camp sites around Esperance accessable by 4wd that are close to good sailing spots. I've seen a few tracks that I like the look of from Google Earth, west of Twilight Beach.
Yo-yo, I haven't been able to find any recommendations on 4wd or fishing sites. Most 4 wheelers or fisho's don't windsurf, so wouldn't know a good sailing spot from a dud.

There isn't any. There are good spots within coupla kilometres of town, no need to travel.
