Hi to all you Gold Coast wind freaks...I'm planning a 6 week stay (mid July to end Aug) and I'm losing sleep over the big question of what gear to bring. Especially, WHAT KIND OF BOARD??

Here's some info that might help paint a clearer picture: I'm 92kg; intermediate, not keen on getting eaten by sharks, and I'll be staying in Broadbeach so I'll probably do 99% of my sailing around that area. And I have NO IDEA!!!!

I'm not cool about waterstarting (sharks...duhh, plus I've been living in Singapore the last 2 years and, brother, there ain't much wind here to learn waterstarting anyways). I usually use a 38 litre, 81cm wide, Free Formula board with a 9.4m sail. If I'm lucky, I can plane a few hours a week. I can't even comprehend the kind of wind you lucky bastards must get over there, and I'm viewing this as a big opportunity to progress...WITHOUT DYING, preferably.

So, WHAT KIND OF BOARD???? More info, advice, etc??? A FREE BEER goes to the person who gives me the best advice!!! (yep, that should work!)

You are coming in the wrong time but guess there's plenty to do even if there's no wind. Not much blows in the winter normally. What you have (free formula n 9.4m sail) would give you the most hours on the water if one were to bring just one board one sail. It will keep you afloat for sure too! Sharks? What sharks. You seldom see them from top . You need to worry more about seaplanes, boats and jetskis at the Broadwater!

You can windsurf all along the Broadwater (just watch sandbanks), end of Smith Street is called the 'train' where most windsurfers sail. Further up at Runaway bay is another popular spot called 'Shearwater' (Shearwater Esplanade) but has to time is right with tide and wind direction. Both spots are flat water. Stay clear from canal outlets though, that's where the deep water is and traffic of underwater creatures is a bit more active .

If you wanna get some surf action, plenty of popular spots on the ocean front, right from Broadbeach, Narrowneck, down to Currumbin. I suggest you start with the train, make a few friends there and go from there. If you rather not bring anything, we do gear rental and have everything from wave to formula gear, short to long term, and you can swap gear as often as you like for a small fee. Or if you want to take a lesson to learn waterstarts, just give us a bell. We are the only Yachting Australia Training Centre in Brisbane, and there are none on the Gold Coast. If timing is right, you might like to join in our certified courses, all listed at

http://www.yachting.org.au/calendar/default.asp?Type=Training%20Course

Just search for keyword 'windsurfing'. Happy sailing!

Now do we qualify for a carton? 4X thanks

hi wet willy.

beer is good for payment up here but we talk in terms of cartons. my boat liscence may have come about that way many years ago.... but i can't confirm or deny..

you could try the windwanderers site. http://www.windwanderers.com/Locations.html
for some info.

padi is on the money too. i think the train would be your best bet.

the free formula gear is about right for that time of year. but getting towards the end of august the northerlies should have hopefully kicked in and they are normally 20kn+

if you are worried about sharks, maybe take up hang-gliding?

not much wind that time of the year here off memory, might get the odd freaky day though.

btw, there hasnt been many guys windsurfing that have been eaten by a shark up here! fear is normal, but not needed.

have a good time on the goldy just the same.

First things first -- beer by the carton?? Only if I am present at, and actively involved in, the drinking thereof. Dig?

Did I say a 38 litre board? Yes, well, either it was a typo or I am including my 100 litre beer gut in the overall volume...

Jeez, are you guys serious?? 9.4 and a 138L Free Formula would be ideal at the Train?? SO I just bought a 7.0 Ezzy Freeride no-cam sail for NOTHING?? Well, *%&$#%%^@$%$#%%^&&&&&&!!!!

I also have a Mistral Vision 130 freeride ... maybe I could bring that sucker and my 9.4, 7.0 and a couple of fins... and of course shark repellant!! How's that sound??

7 is good? 9.4 is good? Both can't be right? Back to square one!! I CANNOT plane on 7 unless God himself is giving me a push; remember I'm 93kg and clueless.

One more time, all together now: WHAT (FLATWATER)GEAR SHOULD I BRING TO THE GOLDCOAST IN JULY-AUGUST????????????????? Minimal kit for maximal results! Puh-LEEEEEEEEZE tell me!!

What sail are you most comfortable with? What board really makes you happy to be windsurfing? For me that's a 7.0 and 105 litre board, but if you've got a 9.4 you'll be planing a lot more often than me!

Not many sharks over here, the box jellyfish stung them all to death. So really not much to worry about

Thanks for the info, guys... after much deliberation, I decided I'm gonna bring 7.0 and 8.5m sails, and a 130 litre freeride board. So if there's not much wind I can still cruise around...and if it picks up, say G'day to the overpowered freak on the Ezzy sail, foaming at the mouth....

and if the wind doesn't show at all with a 130L board you can always put an out board on the back

Don't listen to Curac, ever since he moved down to Tassie the second head he had grafted on hasn't agreed with the first one.

AND, I wore a wetty for the first time this year last weekend... try to do that in Tassie!

(Yes I'm jealous of your wind and waves. I hope it doesn't show )

Just saw the Qantas baggage restrictions. 1 sail = free. 2 sails = exce$$ baggage charges. So looks like it's gonna be a 7.0, 130l board, and a wetsuit. Sound good? None of you are really earning your beer here...
