I am not sure what the situation is with freight. If anyone here knows of a company that does cheap freight to WA from the East Coast it would great to hear about.
Personally I don't understand why Airlines don't introduce a flat rate per surfboard bag, windsurfboard bag or windsurf quiver bag. It would make flying a lot less stressful and you would know exactly what to expect when making travel plans.
I guess this will mean in the long run that either fewer people will fly to WA from the East Coast to go windsurfing or a rental market opportunity will open up. However, I can see that most people would choose Hawaii over WA if the prices for tickets+gear transport were similar.
I posted about this in the general forum last week. It was only today that I actually did the calculations for excess luggage and was horrified.
Luckily three of us going to WA had already booked our tickets to Perth before this came in, so the old luggage restrictions still apply to our bookings. (I wonder if I should front up with 3 gear bags of 32kg each??

)
If I was booking now, I would book Qantas. We took our gear with them from Sydney to WA about 2 years ago, and they were fine. They can charge $20 (or $22?) per piece, which compared to VB's new rules, is better. In our case, they gave us a bit of a break on the price at the time, but even if we had to pay the full deal I think it would still be okay.
There is a rental market in WA anyway, and you can rent gear from 2nd wind and a few other places.
I have been looking at shipping my gear over via rail if the prices get too expensive in the future, but for the moment, Qantas is not a bad alternative.
I can't really blame Virgin Blue for trying to make a few more dollars though as the fuel price increase has hit their bottom line hard. I would have preferred it if they just increased their prices a little bit across the board, but that would probably have impacted their competitiveness.
Hawaii or WA? Why not both!
