I just hit a turtle for the 2nd day in a row, yesterday just a mere catapult. Today...doing about 28k on the lagoon, practically dead flat on my JP FSW 93L/6.6 Naish, bang, fin snapped off in the box and I had a real long swim. Surely I've had my share of turtle experiences now?

Lord Howe, can you give us any info on sailing at the island (besides avoiding turtles). My wife and I have been thinking about a holiday there for a while, and if I can sail while there we'll definately give it a go. So what season, wind strength, need to bring own gear?, tides needed for in the lagoon, etc. Any info would be appreciated, I'm off the water for a few weeks I could start planning a holiday.
Cheers Easty

lordhowe the only creature i think i hit was a small grouper close to shore..as i was speeding towards a group of kids in the shallows and jibed they were suddenly swimming after something and turned out to be as is..they went to me and showed me the fish with a slit crosswise and swore that as i passed by i hit it but i didn't feel nothing not even a bump..at least no fin damage and catapult....regards

Seriously, it can't be too difficult to design an inexpensive fin system that allows you to smash into turtles without either killing the turtle or ending your session (or starting your all night self rescue session). If only there was a marketing advantage in doing it.

I used to make my fins like that, in a us box system. I had a piece of jelly rubber behind the fin to exert forward pressure, the front of the fin instead of tab was a broad V that fitted into a concave V shape fixed with the normal screw, some of these also where canards. Worked quite well, hit anything fin pivoted back on the rear pin. My main problem was getting sensitivity right. &^%& nuisance having to "click" it back in every time you went over a craypot rope. The other problem was if you continued to sail with it flipped down, it put a huge load on the rear pin area.
