Sorry
I thought i was the only one but seems like we are so taken by the sport we go out in conditions where you cant get plaining.
its seems to me reguardless of the wind speed i still need to get my weekend windsurfing fix. no matter what/
i think if it was blowing 3 knots id still rig up my biggest sail and harness.
? addicted need help.........

Get a longboard - 3-5knts and you'll be gliding silently along, even get you onto some small waves.

What's the preferred light wind weapon these days? Old longboards? RS:X? Formula? Anyone tried a Starboard Serenity?

Got no point of comparison with the others but I use my formula a ton in the summer, mostly for afternoon seabreezes but also really comfortable in non-planing conditions. I just keep it in my boatshed over the summer and it definately beats sitting on the beach. Unfortunately biggest sail is only 8.5 but still sail it almost everyday over the warm season.

I'm sure as a cheap option the oldies still have a lot to offer. Depends a bit on what you want to do - race, cruise, etc. I have a RRD Longrider, similar to the Exocet Kona, having a "stepped" tail. They sail very nicely - a bit of speed and they "plane" on the step, you get in the harness and straps and cruise like you're on a shorty (well, sort of). They catch the slightest swell or wave - like a powered malibu. Sure they don't have the turning ability of a shorty, but that's always going to be a trade off if you want to get on the water in the conditions these things are designed for. They can handle a bit of speed for a "recreational" design, I had a GPS on mine once, and hit a peak of 24 knts. They truck upwind too.

I have a Starboard 11'2 stand up paddle board which has the option for putting a sail on it.
Ive had it planing in 10-15 knots with a 5.3m sail.
Im sure if you put a 6m or bigger sail you will be flying in less than 10 knots?

I've got an old Freestyle Funboard about 12' that can be happily used in wind that wouldn't threaten a candle. :)
