What's the preferred light wind weapon these days? Old longboards? RS:X? Formula? Anyone tried a Starboard Serenity?
I'm sure as a cheap option the oldies still have a lot to offer. Depends a bit on what you want to do - race, cruise, etc. I have a RRD Longrider, similar to the Exocet Kona, having a "stepped" tail. They sail very nicely - a bit of speed and they "plane" on the step, you get in the harness and straps and cruise like you're on a shorty (well, sort of). They catch the slightest swell or wave - like a powered malibu. Sure they don't have the turning ability of a shorty, but that's always going to be a trade off if you want to get on the water in the conditions these things are designed for. They can handle a bit of speed for a "recreational" design, I had a GPS on mine once, and hit a peak of 24 knts. They truck upwind too.
